Tickets Now on Sale for Asheville Film Festival Through Sunday

Everythings comin up roses as the Asheville Film Festival makes final preparations for their second annual film competition (and movie-watching marathon), scheduled through Sunday, November 4-7. The festival is a movie-lovers dream, with scores of movies scheduled for screening at a variety of Ashevilles most popular locations throughout downtown not to mention a premiere party with red carpet elegance at the Grove Park Inn, an awards ceremony on Saturday night, and a film festival gala on Sunday evening.

Organizers are also set to honor long-time favorite character actor, Rance Howard, who will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award for his distinguished 56-year career in the business.

Film Festival events will take place in eight downtown venues beginning on Thursday, November 4, at noon, through Sunday, November 7, at 10 PM.

Some 240 films were submitted to the festival, quite an increase from the 178 that were submitted last year. Films were submitted from all over the United States and Canada, as well as from Israel, Iran, Australia, France, and Germany. Of the submitted films, 49 came from North Carolina, 16 of which were from Western North Carolina.

Among the many films that were selected for the festival, several are of local interest. Where the Lilies Bloom, filmed in Western North Carolina in 1974, will be shown on Friday, November 5, in the Diana Wortham Theatre, followed by a question and answer session with cast members Rance Howard, Jan Smithers, Julie Gholson, Matthew Burril, and Helen Harmon, along with producer Terry Nelson. A cocktail party will follow the 30th anniversary screening of the film. Tickets for this event are $20 per person.

The Moog Movie, a documentary profiling keyboard synthesizer pioneer and Asheville resident Bob Moog, has been entered into Film Festival competition. Director Hans Fjellestad is scheduled to attend the festival, which takes place in the 50th anniversary year of Moog's entry in the musical instrument business.

The feature film Killer Diller, based on North Carolina novelist Clyde Edgerton's book, will be exhibited. Directed by Tricia Brock, the film includes music by blues legend Taj Mahal and a score by Grammy-winner Keb' Mo.

The complete film schedule, with times and locations, is available at www.ashevillefilmfestival.com.

The Film Festival will also feature appearances by some of Hollywoods most successful and well-known actors. Actress and model Andie MacDowell, character actor and Film Festival honoree Rance Howard, members of the cast of Where the Lilies Bloom, and actor Robby Benson, along with several other big-name celebrities, are expected to attend this year's event. Popular character actor Rance Howard will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2004 Asheville Film Festival on Saturday, November 6, during a gala evening at the Grove Park Inn Resort and Spa.

Howard's career has spanned five decades with many crowning achievements. From his seventh-grade acting debut during Little Beaver School's Christmas Program, to the more recent blockbusters, Spiderman, Independence Day, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Howard has shown versatility through his character acting roles.

Howard's acting talent runs in the family. Sons Ron and Clint, granddaughter Bryce, and daughter in-law Cheryl have also made quite a name for themselves on the big screen. Howard has acted on screen with his family in films including Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, and The Missing, all directed or produced by his son, Ron.

Howard's acting roles have brought him to Western North Carolina twice in his established career. In 1948, Howard toured with a Children's' Touring Company in Snow White and Cinderella making a stop in Asheville, NC. His next venture to the area would come in 1972 when producer, Robert Radnitz cast him to play poor mountain man, Roy Luther, in the drama, Where the Lilies Bloom. Filmed in the beautiful mountains of Boone, NC, Where the Lilies Bloom chronicles the struggles of a close-knit family living in the backwoods after the death of their mother.
