Flat Rock Playhouse, the State Theatre of North Carolina presents Smokey Joe's Café: The Songs of Leiber and Stoller onstage October 17 through November 4. Smokey Joe’s Café, Broadway's longest-running musical revue, highlights the rock 'n' roll classics of the legendary song-writing duo, Leiber and Stoller. The two met as teens and fused their loves of jazz and blues with rock 'n' roll. Many performers, such as Elvis, The Drifters, The Coasters, Dion, Peggy Lee, Ben E. King, Aretha Franklin and countless more embraced their writing in the 1950's and 1960's. This tribute to their music features 40 of their most-loved songs. Included numbers are Fools Fall In Love, Yakety Yak, Charlie Brown, Jailhouse Rock, Hound Dog, Love Potion #9, Spanish Harlem and Stand By Me.
Smokey Joe’s Café is wall-to-wall music. The show is a musical journey through the history of America in the latter half of the 20th century. The revue style spotlights singing and dancing by talented and energetic performers – featuring a live band onstage, and will deliver a fun trip to the theatre for all ages. You can't listen to these songs without wanting to tap your toes or clap your hands or downright sing along. Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller are the Ira and George Gershwins of the 50’s and 60’s generation. Their songs are some of the greatest American songs ever written - songs that, somehow, everyone knows and will surely never forget. The songs of Leiber and Stoller, specifically, remind you of where you were, what you were doing and who you were with when you first heard them. They're drive-ins and sock hops, padded shoulders and leather jackets. These songs stir our feet, our hands, our heads, and our hearts. On November 17, 1994 Smokey Joe's Café began its pre-Broadway run at the Ahmanson/Doolittle Center in Los Angeles. It opened at the Virginia Theatre on Broadway to rave reviews on March 2, 1995 where it ran for five years to become the longest-running musical revue in the history of Broadway. Smokey Joe's Café was awarded the 1995 Grammy® for Best Musical Show Album and was honored with nominations for seven 1994-1995 Tony® Awards. The success of this show is in no way limited to the American audience. It played to international audiences in Brisbane and Melbourne, Australia before beginning a two-year run in London's West End at the Prince of Wales Theatre on October 23, 1996. In 1997 it was nominated for the Sir Laurence Olivier award for "outstanding musical production". Since then Smokey Joe's Café has toured extensively throughout England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea, Brazil and Turkey. The show continues to tour the United States, Canada and around the world. The New York Times calls Smokey Joe’s Café “an electrifying work of art.” Presented by Edward Jones, Smokey Joe’s Café: The Songs of Leiber and Stoller is a hip-swiveling, do wopping, hand-clapping presentation of memories, music and fun. Smokey Joe’s Café is onstage October 17-November 4. Evening performances are Wednesday through Saturday at 8:15 pm and matinee performances are most Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 2:15.
