Grove Park Inn Announces the Winner of the 18th Annual National Gingerbread House Competition

Every piece of art has a story, and gingerbread art is no exception. In fact, this years winner of the 18th annual National Gingerbread House Competition at the Grove Park Inn has quite the story to tell.

Heather Lewis impressed the judges at the competition with her beautiful Russian stacking dolls made of gingerbread; however Lewis had first planned to submit her creation to the competition last year. But just as she was baking her masterpiece, her home in Austell, GA., was flooded with up to 10 feet of water as heavy rains overwhelmed natural and man made systems, and the record-breaking downpour turned streams into rivers, swamping neighborhoods, washing out roads.

It was nothing short of a disaster, one that sidetracked Lewis's dream of gingerbread gold. But 2010 was a new year, and new chance for Heather Lewis to reach her goal, and to her greatest surprise, she was crowned as the Grand Prize Winner of the 18th annual National Gingerbread House Competition, as 20 of her closest friends and family cheered her on.

All entries were each judged on overall appearance, originality/creativity, difficulty, precision and consistency of theme. Except for the base in which the gingerbread stood, the entries had to be entirely edible.

In total, the competition awards more than $12,000 in cash in prizes to its participants.
