Asheville's heart surgeons and Mission Hospital have again received the top 3-star ranking for quality of cardiac surgery from the world wide organization Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
It is the third year in a row the society placed Mission in the top tier of its ranking system, a recognition received by approximately 10 percent of hospitals which perform cardiac surgery. Mission has been awarded the top ranking for all three years that the award system has been in place. Nearly 1,000 heart bypass surgeries are performed at Mission each year. In valve surgery, 80 percent are treated using repair instead of the more common replacement which requires a lifetime of medication. Stephen W. Ely, PhD, M.D., is surgery line leader for cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. Other cardiothoracic surgeons on staff, all members of Asheville Heart, are Oliver Binns, MD; Harry Burton, MD; Mark Groh, MD; and Alan Johnson, MD. (Images provided by Mission Hospital.)
