If kayaking or windsurfing has always held some appeal for you, but you've never really looked in to how to get started in the sports, this summer program might be just the thing. The popularity of the sport of kayaking has grown tremendously in the past decade, and the Buncombe County Recreation Department has responded by offering a new kayaking program at Lake Julian.Lake Julian, located off of Long Shoals Road in Skyland, is now offering several different kayaking programs every Saturday and selected Sundays beginning in May. Options for both private lessons and group rentals are available. Windsurfing lessons are also available by appointment only. Rental hours will be expanded beginning in June to Wednesday through Saturday from Noon-7PM when all schools are out for the summer.
Just as it is with all water sports, all kayak participants will be required to wear the provided life jackets (PFDs). Also, all participants will be required to demonstrate basic safety skills before venturing out on the lake beyond a limited "practice area." Bathing suits are highly recommended! Rates for the kayaking programs are $5 for half an hour, $10 for an hour, $15 for two hours. For more information or to request private lessons, please call Lake Julian at 828-684-0376.

The Lake Julian staff will provide the basics of instruction and supervision, and participants will have several different styles of boats from which to choose. Children, adults and even after-work exercisers and weekend warriors are sure to enjoy the experience of getting out on the lake and learning something new, all under a Carolina blue sky. People who usually spend their time fishing are likely to enjoy this sport.
