The entertainment industry is certainly taking a long, hard look at Asheville these days, and with good cause. Blue Ridge Motion Pictures is now in place and open for business, making Asheville a potential primetime player in the world of film and television. Add to the mix an actress with the talent and charisma of Andie MacDowell, who makes her home in Asheville, and the stage is set for that winning combination of on-screen talent and great technical facilities that could lure Hollywood away from Hollywood.CBS has ordered a pilot starring Ms. MacDowell that will be set in North Carolina. MacDowell, the Gaffney, SC, native who has forged a successful career as a model, spokeswoman and actress, currently is filming the pilot for CBS, with a working title of "Jo." The story line of the hour-long drama involves a mother/daughter team who run a veterinary hospital. MacDowell made a big splash early in her career with her performance in "sex, lies and videotape," winning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress. The actress has won quite a number of awards and honors since then, including selection for People Magazine's "Fifty Most Beautiful People" in 2000. Through the years, she has acted in many high-profile films, and currently can be seen on television as a spokeswoman for L'Oreal hair products. After completion of the pilot, CBS will then make a decision about whether or not to include the show in its fall lineup. Should CBS pick up the show, "Jo" producers have selected Asheville as the film location. MacDowell and her family reside in Asheville, so it will be a comfortable fit for the actress. In a business where it is commonplace for actors to live for months on location, the opportunity to live and work at home must be, no doubt, an exciting one for MacDowell.
