Cameron Maybin Goes from Local Sports Hero to “The Bigs” in MLB Draft

Ten is a nice, round number, particularly if you happen to be Cameron Maybin. Maybin, who just graduated from high school with his T. C. Roberson classmates on June 3, was drafted #10 overall in Tuesday’s Major League Baseball call-up, bringing years of preparation, speculation, and good fortune to an end, of sorts, and to a new beginning with the Detroit Tigers.

While most of his high school classmates will spend this summer getting ready for their freshman year in college, Maybin is more than likely going to spend his time preparing for a move to Lakeland, FL, home of the Tigers’ Rookie League farm team.

Cameron Maybin has been a standout athlete since he started playing sports at about 5 years of age. Always a star player, Maybin played basketball and baseball for Roberson, until this year when he dropped basketball to focus entirely on his baseball career. He did not disappoint with his performance, leading his team with a state record .662 season batting average and a state record 175 career runs. Additionally, he recorded 15 home runs, 37 RBIs, and only five strikeouts his senior year.

The electricity around Roberson baseball was palpable this season – a casual scan of a typical crowd for almost any home game was likely to include several MLB scouts, all there to take a closer look at this talented kid. Maybin’s natural talents, including unusual strength and speed, are coupled with an intellect, work ethic, and clear understanding of the game. If the bright light of impending fame ever got in his way, it never showed, either on or off the field; Maybin has remained cool under pressure and accessible to his friends and family.

Other outstanding WNC athletes have made it to the major leagues, but no other baseball player has ever been drafted at such a lofty position. Dave Cheadle, an exceptional former Asheville High School pitcher who was drafted by the New York Yankees in 1970, was the 12th overall pick.
