Consolidated Metco Announces $10 Million Expansion in Haywood County; 70 New Positions

Consolidated Metco, Inc. announced plans to expand its manufacturing operations into Canton with a new plant in the Beaverdam Industrial Park.

The new manufacturing plant, an injection molding operation supplying interior components to the heavy truck market, is scheduled to open in October with full production by the end of the year. The plant will initially provide 70 jobs, most of which will be production workers.

This demonstrates Haywood Countys willingness to pursue job opportunities for our citizens, Swanger said. We look forward to a long and productive relationship with ConMet and other Haywood County companies. We stand ready to assist in anyway possible.

Steve Norman, vice president of operations for the Plastic Division of Consolidated Metco, said the primary parts supplied by the plant will be dashes, interior trim, door panels and sleeper cabinets. The plant will initially be equipped with 13 Molding Machines ranging in size from 225 tons to 2000 tons. The additional machines are needed for the expected growth of the heavy truck market over the next year and new projects slated for production in 2005, Norman said.

Consolidated Metco, or ConMet, has two other manufacturing facilities in western North Carolina. The Cashiers Plant started in 1969 and currently has 12 machines and 125 employees. The Bryson City opened in 1995 with 15 molding machines and employed 307 people. Norman said the Bryson City plant was completing a 90,000 square foot expansion and the addition of 16 machines, and investment of $13 million.

In the last six months, the ConMet facilities in Bryson city and Cashiers have added more than 85 manufacturing positions.

The initial investment in the Canton facility is expected to be more than $10 million.

Mark Clasby, executive director of the Haywood County EDC, said he was looking forward to working with the ConMet.

This is an exciting day, Clasby said. Im looking forward to working with Mr. Norman.

ConMet has proven to be a strong company for western North Carolina, with an impressive history of adding jobs. That is good news for the workforce of Haywood County.
