When Angels in America premiered in 1990, it quickly became a catalytic theatrical event. Newsweek called it �the most ambitious American play of our time� and The New York Times called it a �a searching and radical rethinking of American political drama.� Its scope is huge, covering the AIDS epidemic, America�s shift to the political right, as well as grand themes of faith, loss, and identity. But at the same time it is heartbreakingly intimate, with indelible characters - gay and straight, black and white, Mormon and Jewish.

"Angels in America: Millennium Approaches" is the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and the Tony Award for Best Play. It was adapted into an Emmy Award-winning miniseries for HBO in 2003, directed by Mike Nichols.

NC Stage�s production of Angels is the first professional production of the play in Asheville. A production in Charlotte in the mid-90s stirred up a firestorm of political controversy that made national headlines.

North Carolina Stage Company has been named Best Local Stage Company by readers of the Mountain Xpress for the past five years. The theatre offers an intriguing mix of comedy and drama, contemporary and classic plays, all in a uniquely intimate 101-seat theatre.

Angels is a local production, employing 17 local artists, and one actor who is a North Carolina native, currently living in LA. The play is co-produced by a local business, Posana Caf�, and a non-profit, Western North Carolina AIDS Project. Posana Caf� is located at 1 Biltmore Avenue on Pack Square, and serves a constantly evolving menu based on seasonal local food.

Western North Carolina AIDS Project is a non-profit providing HIV related services and education to the people of Western NC. WNCAP will host a series of post-show discussions at NC Stage; dates are listed on www.ncstage.org.

Season subscriptions are now on sale for the theatre�s 4-play Mainstage season. In addition to Angels in America, NC Stage offers the French farce Boeing-Boeing in February, the haunting and mysterious One Flea Spare in April, and Tennessee Williams� classic tragedy The Glass Menagerie in June (the last co-produced with Immediate Theatre Project). Plus, the theatre presents an intimate stage adaptation of It�s a Wonderful Life, opening the day after Thanksgiving (not included in subscription packages).

"Angels in America: Millennium Approaches" runs October 13 � November 7, 2010. Tickets range from $16 to $28, with $10 student rush tickets. Subscriptions are on sale now, offering 12% - 25% off ticket prices. Student rush tickets are $10, available at 2:00pm the day of the show.
