The New York Times Article Highlights Asheville as an Appalachian Shangri-La

Well, you know your town has hit the big times when it is highlighted in an article by The New York Times in its Sunday travel section. Such is the good fortune for Asheville, North Carolina, which is featured in Sundays The New York Times travel section in a full page spread titled, 36 HOURS Asheville, NC, by Chris Dixon.

Dixon is quoted in his opening paragraph as saying, Asheville is an Appalachian Shangri-La. This year-round resort town, tucked between the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains, draws a funky mix of New Agers, fleece-clad mountain bikers, antiques lovers and old-time farmers. And whats there not to like? Charming yet surprisingly cosmopolitan for a town of about 73,000, Asheville has a Southern appeal all its own. There are lazy cafes and buzzing bistros, Art Deco skyscrapers and arcades reminiscent of Paris, kayaking and biodiesel cooperatives and one of the worlds largest private homes the Biltmore Estate, a French Renaissance-style mansion with 250 rooms. No wonder so many locals first start out as tourists.

The article features a weekend itinerary in Asheville by the author during which he begins his weekend on a late Friday afternoon at the Grove Arcade, and continues the evening with dinner at Melas an authentic Indian Restaurant. Dixons tour continues Saturday morning with a healthy breakfast at the Early Girl Eatery, followed by a downtown tour, a tour of the West Asheville River Arts District, followed by Bluegrass music at the Root Bar No. 1 on Tunnel Road. Sundays tour includes a visit to the Farmers Market and a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway to Mount Mitchell, at 6,684 feet, the highest peak in the Eastern United States.
