Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute Sponsors Lunar Eclipse Photo Contest

A lunar eclipse photo and drawing contest is being co-sponsored by the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) and the Transylvania Times newspaper.

One of natures most spectacular phenomena, a lunar eclipse will be visible in North Carolina the evening of March 3. The Moon will be totally within the Earths shadow at Moonrise, 6:24 p.m. The Moon will begin emerging from the Earths shadow at 6:58 p.m. and will continue until the full Moon is visible at 9:24 p.m.

PARI is hosting a special Evening at PARI program Friday, Feb. 16, concerning eclipses and how to photograph them. Evening at PARI is a monthly program at PARI and requires advance registration. For details, please visit the PARI web site, www.pari.edu.

Contest participants may submit photos or drawings and winners will be determined in several age brackets: 5-7, 8-10, 11-13, 13-18 and 18 and above. Entries must by submitted or postmarked by March 9. Contest winners will be announced at the March 16 Evening at PARI, published in the March 19 issue of the Transylvania Times and posted on the PARI web site. For information about submitting entries and other contest details, please visit www.pari.edu.

About PARI

The Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) is a not-for-profit public foundation established in 1998. Located in the Pisgah Forest 30 miles southwest of Asheville, NC, the PARI campus is a dark sky location for astronomy and was selected in 1962 by NASA as the site for one of the first U.S. satellite tracking facilities. Today, the 200 acre campus houses radio and optical telescopes, earth science instruments, 30 buildings, a fulltime staff and all the infrastructure necessary to support STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education and research. PARI offers educational programs at all levels, from K-12 through post-graduate research. The institute is affiliated with the 16-campus University of North Carolina system through PARSEC, a UNC Center hosted at PARI, and is a member of the NC Grassroots Museum Collaborative.
