Paul Jeremias Photography Exhibit at Captains Bookshelf Through July 4

A selection of photographs by talented photographer and local resident Paul Jeremias will be exhibited at the Captain's Bookshelf, located at 31 Page Avenue in downtown Asheville, through July 4, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 AM 6 PM. The exhibition, entitled Hero Worship, presents the world of opera, not as normally seen from the audiences perspective, but from backstage.

For eight years, Mr. Jeremias has photographed the stage sets in opera houses in the United States, Europe, and Canada. He has documented them from unusual points of view, in places most people would rarely see the backstage, basements, and storage areas. Mr. Jeremias has developed a keen eye for the theatrical; not only in an opera house, but also in the way he sees the world, as a place for performance of operatic scale.

The images in Hero Worship are unique 4x5", 8x10", and 20x24"Polaroid photographs that are both intimate and alluring, and create the same thrill and excitement of peering into forbidden places.

Like the backstage in opera houses, the under-padding of costumes is rarely seen, yet it supports the actor, giving context and character essential to the drama. The under-padding provides humps, bumps, breasts, and bellies, and transforms the actors appearance by creating the body type necessary for the character and performance. Jeremias has photographed the under-padding by itself with dramatic lighting, and encourages the viewer to experience these rarely seen objects in an entirely new way.

Mr. Jeremias is a Canadian artist who graduated from Toronto's Ryerson Polytechnical University in 1981. He subsequently earned a Master of Arts degree and a Master of Fine Arts degree (ABD), both from the University of New Mexico. He has had one-person shows in Toronto and San Francisco (at the San Francisco Performing Arts Library and Museum in 1992), the Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum in1994, and numerous group shows in Canada, United States, and Europe. He received grants from the Ontario Arts Council in 1982 and 1990 and from the Canada Council in 1982, 1987, and 1994. He has work in museums and private and corporate collections in Canada and the United States. In 1997, Mr. Jeremias received a Canada Council Visual Artist Grant (Artist in Mid-Career) to start a new project. He is presently finishing a body of work of the abandoned launch pads at Cape Canaveral, some of which can currently be seen at the Colburn Earth Science Museum at Pack Place in downtown Asheville.

Mr. Jeremias has taught art and photography at Parsons School of Design in New York, Mars Hill College, UNCA, Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, Western Carolina University, and the Ringling College of Art (Sarasota, FL). He also maintains a diversified commercial clientele including The American Craft Council, Southern Highlands Craft Guild, Jim Samsel Architects, Robert Griffin Architects, P.A., The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, The Guggenheim Museum, Duke University, Ringling School of Art and Design, The Sarasota Opera, and The Santa Fe Opera. Presently he lives and works in Asheville.
