Plasticard-Locktech International, the largest keycard manufacturer in the United States, announced that they will relocate and expand from its 32,500 square foot Asheville facility, which PLI has occupied on Pond Road for the past five years, into the 54,500 square foot facility in the Sweeten Creek Industrial Center, which was recently vacated by Simula Corporation. In addition to purchasing the building, PLI will purchase a new 6-color, 40-inch offset Komori Press, which should be the largest press of its type in the Asheville area. The purchase of the press and other pre-production and finishing equipment will allow PLI to continue increasing its market share and will provide an opportunity for PLI to vastly expand its product offerings. The relocation will also allow the company to add an additional 16 employees to its current work force of more than 55 employees.Mark Goldberg, PLI's chief operations officer said, "Asheville has been a great location for our business. Jeff Pigg, PLI's comptroller added, "We definitely want to stay in the area as we continue to grow." In May 2000, Plasticard Products, Inc., located in Asheville, announced its merger with Locktech, Inc., located in Wilmington, DE. In 2001, Plasticard-Locktech International announced the purchase of an additional $1 million plus in state-of-the-art card manufacturing equipment. By January 2002, PLI had successfully consolidated all manufacturing and administrative functions into the corporate headquarters in Asheville. Plasticard-Locktech International was the recipient of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce's 2000 Small Manufacturer of the Year Award. Products manufactured and sold by Plasticard-Locktech International reach more than 10,000 hotels throughout the world through contracts with most major hospitality chains and many other corporate customers. "We are pleased about Plasticard-Locktech International's continuing growth," said David Young, chairman of the Buncombe County Economic Development Commission.
