PRAWNC Presents Dr. Catherine Mitchell on Thursday


Public relations professionals, marketers and anyone looking to make a media pitch in writing can learn how to improve their technique during the Public Relations Association of Western North Carolina's presentation of Dr. Catherine Mitchell and her seminar "Good writing vs. the things editors look for." The seminar is open to the public and will be offered during the upcoming PRAWNC monthly luncheon on April 28 at 11:30 a.m. at the North Carolina Arboretum. The cost to attend is $15 for members and $25 for non-members and includes lunch.

Dr. Mitchell has nearly forty years of experience in communications with specialization in news writing, public affairs and media relations. During her seminar "Good writing vs. the things editors look for," Mitchell will teach participants the three things a person can do instantly to improve his or her writing voice. Mitchell will also cover news judgment and press release qualities that influence an editor.

Mitchell was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1979 with the Point Reyes Light for her reporting on the Synanon cult. She has written three books: Margaret Fuller's New York Journalism: A Biographical Essay and Key Writings (University of Tennessee Press, 1995), The Light on Synanon (Seaview Books, 1980), and The Newswriting Formula, co-authored with Mark West (St. Martin's Press, 1995). Mitchell has earned degrees from Florida State, Stanford and the University of Tennessee. She teaches newspaper skills courses, media history, and women's studies, and specializes in nineteenth century newspaper women, at UNC Asheville. Professor
