SAFE KIDS Western North Carolina is holding car seat inspections Saturday, Febuary 17th at Asheville Chevrolet in observance of Child Passenger Safety Week.
At more than 120 Child Passenger Safety Week events across the country, certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will perform inspections and train parents and caregivers to install and adjust their car seats properly. Think of it as a private lesson in the correct use of your car seat, says Beverly Britt, SAFE KIDS Western North Carolina Co-Coordinator. SAFE KIDS Western North Carolina is one of more than 120 coalitions across the country launching or expanding partnerships with Chevrolet dealers during Child Passenger Safety Week this year. Chevy is the lead partner in the SAFE KIDS BUCKLE UP??program. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading killer of children under 14. Under North Carolina law, all children under [8 years and/or 80 pounds] must be restrained in an appropriate child safety seat whether in the family car, traveling with friends or relatives, or in a rental car or taxi, says Beverly Britt. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 73 percent of all child passenger restraints more than 80 percent of car seats and about 40 percent of booster seats are used incorrectly. Its a parents responsibility to make sure a childs car seat is properly installed and adjusted. Were here to show you how. In a crash, a child restrained incorrectly is 3.5 times more likely to be seriously injured than a child who is properly restrained, says Beverly Britt. SAFE KIDS Western North Carolina provides car seat inspections throughout the year as well. To find a car seat inspection site or certified technician near you, call 828-213-5548 or visit www.safekids.org. An inspection is free and usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. Bring your child and the owners manuals for your vehicle and your car seat. Events: WHO:Safe Kids Western North Carolina / Mission Childrens Hospital in partnership with OSFM (Office of State Fire Marshall), GHSP (Governors Highway Safety Program), Babies R Us, Food Lion of Fairview, and Asheville Chevrolet. WHAT: Safe Kids Western North Carolina will provide car seat inspections by certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians. In observance of Child Passenger Safety Week, technicians will train parents and caregivers in the proper installation and setup of their own specific car seats in their vehicles.
