John B. Lewis Soccer Complex at Azalea Park Dedicated: Area's Premier Soccer Facility in WNC

Asheville's newest sports venue, the John B. Lewis Soccer Complex at Azalea Park, recently had its grand opening and dedication ceremony at the park. The soccer complex, home to the Asheville Buncombe Youth Soccer Association, is the most premier facility of its kind in western North Carolina featuring four artificial turf fields. In addition to youth soccer, adult soccer and flag football and other sports will play at the complex. The complex will host tournaments throughout the year generating an anticipated $1.1 million economic impact per year for Asheville and Buncombe County.

Asheville Parks and Recreation, the Lewis Family Foundation and the WNC Soccer Foundation joined forces in 2002 to design and raise funds to build the complex. Since then $2.5 million toward the $3.8 million goal has been raised through grants, donations and sponsorships. Many opportunities to support the soccer complex still exist and are available at various levels of investment.

The soccer complex is the first phase of Azalea Park, a 155-acre park currently under construction on Azalea Rd. along the Swannanoa River in east Asheville. Once complete, the park will link to Recreation Park, the WNC Nature Center and the Asheville Municipal Golf Course creating a large public recreation complex featuring playgrounds, swimming pool, golf, disc golf, trails, river access, picnic areas, volleyball and basketball, amphitheater and restoration of the historic Thomas Wolfe cabin.

Azalea Park is located on Azalea Rd., south of Recreation Park at Swannanoa River Rd. and Gashes Creek Rd. For more information about the John B. Lewis Soccer Complex, or to make a donation, contact the Asheville Parks and Recreation Department at 828-259-5800 or www.ashevilleparks.org.
