"Traditionally, blood donations decrease in the summer due to vacations, holidays and summer breaks for schools and colleges. Unfortunately, the need for blood often increases during this same time period because of travel-related injuries and elective surgeries," stated Kristi Brown, of The Asheville American Red Cross Blood Services.

Approximately 1,600 units of blood are needed each day by patients in the more than 103 local hospitals served by the American Red Cross.

Eligible blood donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in general good health. For more information or to make an appointment to donate blood, call 1-800 GIVE LIFE or 828-258-3888 or visit www.redcrossblood.org.
