UNC Asheville's Craft Studies Initiative will continue its "Meet the Maker: Conversations of Meaning with Craftspeople" lecture series with a talk by Fred Horowitz, co-author of "Josef Albers: To Open Eyes." Horowitz will speak at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 7, in Owen Hall, room 237. The event is free and open to the public."Josef Albers: To Open Eyes" chronicles Albers' life in teaching, from his first years in the Bauhaus in prewar Germany, to Black Mountain College in the 1930s and 1940s, and then at Yale in the 1950s. Albers was not only a captivating teacher known for his wit and dramatic flair, but also an internationally eminent artist and design and color theorist. He is perhaps best remembered for his "Homage to the Square," a series of hundreds of prints, paintings, drawings and tapestries that explored interactions of color within concentrically arranged squares. His work has had wide influence on generations of artists, architects and designers. Horowitz, who studied with Albers at Yale, later taught at the University of Michigan School of Design. During his visit to Asheville, Horowitz will also lead a weekend workshop, co-sponsored by the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center, using the Albers Color Course.
