Registration is now open for the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) test prep classes offered by UNC Asheville�s Extension and Distance Education Office. Classes will meet on the UNC Asheville campus.
The LSAT prep class will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays from October 11-November 15. This course is designed to prepare students for the December 2 LSAT, a standardized exam for admission to all 196 Law School Admission Council member schools. Cost for the course is $400, including study materials. Registration deadline is October 2; an additional $15 fee will be added for late registration. The GRE prep course will meet for four consecutive weeks from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from October 17-November 9. The course is designed to increase familiarity with the various types of verbal, quantitative and analytical questions present on the GRE computer-generated general test, required by most graduate programs for admission. Cost for the course is $325, which includes study materials and a practice disk. Registration deadline is October 6; late sign-up will result in a $15 fee.
Registration is also open for Effective Teacher Training, a helpful course for those teaching and substituting in North Carolina public school systems. The class is offered through UNC Asheville�s Extension and Distance Education Office. Effective Teacher Training will cover a variety of subject areas, including North Carolina public school policy and course of study, behavior management, sub packets, strategies for students with learning disabilities, emergency procedures and legal issues. The course qualifies as a continuing education unit (CEU) for certification renewal and for the No Child Left Behind Act. The class will meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on four consecutive Saturdays from October 21-November 11 on the UNC Asheville campus. Cost is $75 plus textbook, which is available at the UNC Asheville bookstore. Participants will receive a certificate of completion. Three CEU credits are available with a $15 processing fee due with a completed form at the end of the class. Class size is limited. Early registration is suggested. UNC Asheville also will host a distance learning course designed for lateral entry teachers this fall. The three-credit hour course, �Teaching Reading in the Content Area for Lateral Entry Teachers,� will be offered via teleconference at three different locations: UNC Asheville, McDowell Technical Community College in Marion, and at Tri-County Community College in Murphy. Classes will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays from October 17-December 3. The course is designed for teachers who have their own classrooms and are seeking alternative licensing through the Regional Alternative Licensing Center. The course will instruct teachers how to engage students in active learning, develop units that integrate reading strategies and infuse elements of the writing process. Thirty hours of class time will be spent in videoconferencing and 15 hours using online technology. Tuition is $237.57 plus a $20 non-refundable application fee. In addition, students must have a computer with Microsoft Word and Internet access.
