What Will a Business Improvement District (BID) Do for Downtown Asheville?

What will a BID do for Downtown Asheville? Create a cleaner and safer downtown. One area of focus will be graffiti removal, a growing problem in the central business district. Studies have shown that BIDs actually discourage graffiti because they provide for quick and professional removal of tags. Several of downtown's largest property owners have expressed support of a BID because of its effect on decreasing graffiti.

There's more. A BID will result in an increase in downtown property values (up 2%) and retail sales (up 5%). Plus, creation of a BID will provide for additional services like snow removal, litter pickup and sidewalk cleaning, as well as better enforcement of the panhandling ordinance. And, BID participants are in full control of how their dollars are spent. Every dime raised from the BID assessments will be spent downtown, as opposed to regular taxes, which are collected from downtown and dispersed regionally.

The bottom line is that a BID will make downtown Asheville better for business and property owners, residents and visitors alike.

City Council will consider implementing a BID at its June 12 meeting. We ask you to show your support by writing to Asheville City Council. You can also submit a letter to the editor of the Asheville Citizen-Times. For more information on an Asheville BID and points to include in your letter of support, click here.
