A Visual Adventure: The International Photo Exhibit Takes Viewers Around the World

Want to travel the world without leaving town? Go on a visual adventure where you can capture a glimpse of the world’s hidden treasures from countries including Spain, Ghana, Kyrgyzstan, and Jamaica.

The rotating photo exhibit features photographs taken by UNC Asheville students, faculty and staff who have captured their experiences abroad since 2007. The exhibit is a collection of winning photos from the Study Abroad Office’s annual international photo contest, and will be on view in UNC Asheville’s Highsmith Art and Intercultural Gallery through September 8, and in Owen Hall’s Second Floor Gallery from September 10 – October 9. Selected photographs will be for sale.

Anna Gachechiladze, a senior sociology major and photography minor from Chapel Hill, won the first Chancellor’s Purchase Award at last year’s exhibition.

“It was really exciting, especially since it was the first Chancellor’s Award,” Gachechiladze said. “I’ve been taking a lot of pictures for a long time and not actually doing anything with them except for sending them to family and friends, so it’s nice to have them recognized on a higher scale.”

Have a fantastic photo from your own adventures abroad? Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to submit their photos for this year’s contest; deadline is October 1. One participant will win $250 for their submission.

Or prepare for your next journey by participating in a travel photography workshop with Eric Tomberlin, assistant professor of art, and Carrie Tomberlin, lecturer in art, from noon – 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22. This workshop allows avid photographers to improve their photographic skills and to help them capture incredible moments when studying abroad. To RSVP, contact Cara Gilpin at [email protected].
