Bulldogs Take Over Sole Possession of First Place in the Big South

Behind seven three-pointers from senior guard David Robertson, the UNC Asheville men’s basketball team recently picked up a 66-53 Big South Conference road win over Campbell at Gore Arena.

The win coupled with Winthrop’s 84-67 win over Liberty allowed Asheville (22-7, 14-2 Big South Conference) to take over sole possession of first place in the Big South Conference with two regular-season games remaining.

Neither team really came out of the gates strongly, but with just over five minutes left in half No. 1 the Bulldogs owned a 20-9 lead over Campbell (13-15, 6-10 Big South Conference) after a Robertson three-pointer.

The Bulldogs would own a 27-12 lead and their largest lead of the game at 18 points at 34-16 with 15:44 left in the contest.

Asheville would go on to outscore the Camels, 41-39, in the second half to emerge with the 13-point win.

The Bulldogs as a team shot 41.2 percent (21-of-51) from the field, while Campbell shot just 38.3 percent (18-of-47) as a team.

Robertson just missed on the school single-game record of eight made three-pointers with his career-high-tying seven treys in the game. It’s the second time in league play this year that Robertson has connected on seven three-pointers as he also knocked down seven treys in UNC Asheville’s 90-85 overtime win over Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016.

In total, Robertson was 7-of-13 from beyond the arc en route to collecting a career-high-tying 23 points that he also scored against Gardner-Webb. Robertson also had two rebounds, two assists and two steals in the win over the Camels.

Senior forward Will Weeks just missed on a double-double in the win over Campbell with 18 points and eight rebounds to go along with three assists, one block and one steal.

Playing without the nation’s fourth-leading scorer in Chris Clemons, Campbell was led by three players in double figures in their loss to the Bulldogs with Shane Whitfield and Marcus Burk each scoring 14.
