“What’s Your Story?” Storytelling Event to Feature Dr. Dwight Mullen

The Joseph Initiative is hosting their 3rd “What’s Your Story?” storytelling event from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm on August 23rd at Lenoir Rhyne University.

The guest speaker for the evening will be Dr. Dwight Mullen, a political science professor at UNC Asheville.

It’s easy to see that our country is divided. That said, if we want to live together as a civilized country, we must find ways to come together regardless of our beliefs. To do that means we must have some difficult conversations; to be able to tell our stories. Storytelling is an opportune way to get to know and understand each other.

The Joseph Initiative asked Dr. Mullen to speak at the August storytelling event because he is a bright light in this community. As a political science professor at UNCA, his desire is to enlighten every student who takes his class. Dr. Mullen received two advanced degrees in Political Science from Atlanta University, earning a PhD in 1987 and an MA in 1978. He also received a BA in History and Political Science from Loma Linda University in California in 1976.

Dr. Mullen is passionate about teaching students that they have a personal role in making their community safe and our system fair and just – to stand up against injustices. He has taught for more than 30 years. Dr. Mullen is a Fulbright Senior Scholar and instrumental in The State of Black Asheville. His greatest quality can be found in his approachability as he creates an atmosphere in which talking openly is celebrated. Dr. Mullen is also a vigilant community member whose heart’s desire is for equality and healing in our land. He is married to Dr. Dolly Mullen, who is quite an integral force in this community as well, and together they are a dynamic duo.
