The Fine Colombians began in 2017 when singer/keyboardist Dr. K (Scott Eggert), fresh from finishing a doctorate degree in music composition at The University of Georgia, started nursing a daydream of starting a Steely Dan tribute band. Dr. K had previously played with New York musicians such as Dave Fields, Kevin Brennan, Mark Rivera, and the ensemble Nite-Time. Being a consummate arranger, he started writing arrangements of Dan tunes for a 3-horn jazz band, thinking that “one day I’ll find the players to make this happen.” Out of the blue, his old friend and bassist Scott Robbins texted him, asking if he wanted to do an evening of Steely Dan tunes with his Knoxville-based band State Street Rhythm Section. It turned out that Robbins and guitarist Brian David Lee (who played together for years in Knoxville bands such as State Street, Soulfinger, and Alien Love Charm) had the same daydream and wanted to make it a reality. “Well funny you should ask me that,” Dr. K said…and soon enough they were rehearsing in the home studio of drummer Scott Fugate, another excellent Knoxville musician. Eventually they were joined by vocalists Meredith Whitehead and Michele Williams of the band Freequency, as well as trumpeter Michael Spirko (Knoxville Jazz Orchestra, Streamliners Swing Orchestra), alto saxophonist Dave Eckman (Soulfinger, Mighty Blue, City Limit) and tenor saxophonist Robert Knapp (Kenny Rogers, Buddy Rich, Lionel Hampton).
The band booked their first performance at Scruffy City Hall in Knoxville, under the name State Street Rhythm Section. Their show sent shock waves through the Knoxville music scene, and 5 months later their second performance at The Open Chord (Knoxville) sold out, and crowds gathered in the parking lot to hear the show in spite of not being able to get in. Following that triumph, the band has re-christened itself The Fine Colombians, and has scheduled its third show to introduce themselves to the Asheville music scene, at the stellar venue of Ambrose West. This superb group of musicians, each with 30-40 years of professional experience, looks forward to sharing their passion for the music of Steely Dan with their newfound Asheville audience.
