Information

Following in the tradition of literary and philosophical salons of the 17th and 18th century, the Center for Craft hosts gatherings in conjunction with each exhibition to engage with a central theme of each show. A book is selected based on the theme and provide a framework for discussion.

The salon theme is Sustainable Futures.

Our discussion will center on themes of the exhibition and book, The Upcycle: Beyond Sustainability – Designing for Abundance by William McDonough and Michael Braungart, a long-awaited companion to Cradle to Cradle.

Refreshments will be served. No reading is necessary prior to the event. This event is free & open to the public.

About the Book

The Upcycle: Beyond Sustainability—Designing for Abundance is the follow-up publication to Cradle to Cradle, one of the most consequential ecological manifestoes of the 21st century. Drawing and building on sustainable living lessons gained from 10 years of putting the Cradle to Cradle concept into practice with businesses, governments, and ordinary people, authors William McDonough and Michael Braungart illustrate the next steps in the solution to our ecological crisis: We don’t just use or reuse and recycle resources with greater effectiveness, we actually improve the natural world as we live, create, and build.

About the Authors

Michael Braungart is a German chemist who advocates that humans can make a positive instead of a negative environmental impact by redesigning industrial production and therefore that dissipation is not waste.

William McDonough is an American designer, advisor, author, and thought leader. and founding principal of William McDonough + Partners, co-founder of McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC) with German chemist Michael Braungart as well as co-author of Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things and The Upcycle: Beyond Sustainability—Designing for Abundance.
