Bring your lunch and join WFW members and guests for our next Brown Bag Lunch and Learn: Women’s Pathways to Prison and Their Needs Upon Returning Home.
Over the past 20 years, women have been the fastest growing segment of the prison population. In comparison to men, women’s pathways to crime are more likely to involve histories of abuse and trauma, mental health and substance abuse.
Upon release, these needs in addition to poverty, parental stress, dysfunctional relationships, and inadequate childcare, place women at high risk for returning to prison. Unfortunately, criminal justice agencies, prisons especially, have been either unresponsive to these concerns or ineffective in their efforts to address them.
Dr. Patricia Van Voorhis, Professor Emerita of Criminal Justice, will discuss the unique needs of women offenders and recommend ways that non-criminal justice, community agencies might help.
