Neighborhood Spotlight: Hillside Terrace

A group of people at a round table looking over plans.

Hillside Terrace is a small but vibrant neighborhood association serving 60 or so residents who reside in 33 homes located in West Asheville between historic Malvern Hills and the Asheville School campus.

The area seeks to promote a strong sense of community through social gatherings, stewardship of abundant green space, and neighborly communication about shared interests and concerns.

The following information was provided by representatives of the neighborhood as well as the City of Asheville:

About the Neighborhood

The residents of Hillside Terrace represent diverse interests, ages, and backgrounds. The neighborhood is home to young families, retired folks, teachers, artists, musicians, entrepreneurs, professionals, tradesman, and a group home for adults with cognitive disabilities. Our differences make us richer and stronger. In our neighborhood meetings, residents were clear that we want to continue to be a place that respects individual privacy, differences, and styles; while at the same time learning from and supporting each other.

With hundreds of acres of greenspace around us, we are blessed with an abundance of varied flora and fauna — old-growth trees, including native chestnuts, plus deer, black bear, raccoons, and foxes. At the same time, its close proximity to West Asheville’s culture and restaurant scene provides the conveniences of the city with the feel of the country.

Residents want to maintain this beautiful contradiction.

We gather together to pick up trash and pull invasives, and there’s a crew of “weed for hops” volunteers that work to cut ivy off the neighborhood trees with a shared beer at the end! A common love of ice cream has been officially established and ice cream socials are a great way for us to learn who likes sprinkles and who likes nuts!

Recent development

Following a year of discussion, debate, listening and information gathering, 80% of homeowners signed and notarized our updated Hillside Terrace Covenants. The Asheville School generously shared their conference room so we could come together multiple times as a large group to develop a shared understanding of what we wanted in our new covenants and how best to revitalize them. It was an astounding connective process.
