Prior to becoming principal, he served as the school’s assistant principal for five years, where he was instrumental in shaping the school’s positive culture and advancing teaching and learning. Before stepping into administration, Johnston began his career as a fourth-grade teacher at Lucy S. Herring Elementary School, formerly Vance Elementary. His classroom experience continues to inform his leadership approach, rooted in the belief that every child deserves rigorous academic opportunities and nurturing support.

Johnston’s unwavering commitment to his school community was especially evident following the impacts of Helene. He immediately reported to Asheville Middle School and worked tirelessly to support his staff and students, helping them navigate an extraordinary and challenging time.

In addition to his work in Asheville City Schools, Johnston is a proud recipient of the North Carolina Principal Fellows award, a distinction that recognizes exemplary educators who aspire to begin a career in school administration.

Johnston expressed his gratitude for this award, stating, “I’m so thankful for this recognition, but even more thankful to be part of a district that means so much to me. Our students, families, and community are the heart of everything we do, and I feel lucky every day to serve alongside such dedicated educators. This truly is my dream job, and I’m grateful to have a chance to make a difference in a place I love.”

Asheville City Schools Superintendent Dr. Maggie Fehrman praised Johnston’s leadership, saying, “Blair Johnston distinguishes himself as a leader of leaders. His dedication to doing what is best for students and his ability to build positive relationships with his students, staff, and families are central to his leadership. Blair’s reflective nature and ability to create collective impact made him a natural choice as the ACS Principal of the Year.”

Dr. Fehrman announced Mr. Johnston as the 2026 Principal of the Year during the Opening Convocation at Asheville High School. Johnston was celebrated alongside his family, including his children and parents, and he will go on to represent Asheville City Schools in the regional competition for the 2026 North Carolina Wells Fargo Principal of the Year.
