Worldwide, the conservation community is grappling with the challenge of ensuring that natural systems – and the species that depend on them – have the ability to adapt to climate change and will continue to thrive. Fortunately, we know that land protection can strategically increase the resiliency of natural systems. SAHC has partnered with the Conservation Trust for NC, Open Space Institute, Wildlands Network, NEMAC, EcoForesters and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) to develop sophisticated frameworks to assess vulnerability and identify priorities for climate resilience.

Our own Southern Appalachians have been identified as critical to the path of migration for species from the southeast. SAHC continues to use new data and new modeling to build upon our strategic land protection planning. By prioritizing areas adjacent to large protected tracts and creating contiguous networks of conservation lands for wildlife corridors we continue to create more resilient landscapes.

Join us as we discuss how we are working together with new climate data to create a network of resilient protected lands and why our efforts matter now more than ever.

April is Earth Month, and to celebrate, Defenders of Wildlife is teaming up with Bee City USA for a volunteer project to improve the Beaver Lake Pollinator Meadow. Won’t you join us in removing non-native invasive plant species from this important Asheville habitat?

Please be sure to wear long pants, a long-sleeve t-shirt, a hat, sunscreen and gloves. Bring plenty of water – and your garden pruners if you have them!

Get an introduction to the two-wheel tractor, an economical tool used worldwide by backyard gardeners, homesteaders, property managers and market gardeners/farmers. We will demonstrate multiple attachments from the basic tiller and power harrow to the trailer and mower, with hands-on experience for participants to learn how these tools could help efficiently manage a farm or property. Cost: $20

A fundraising 5k that all proceeds will benefit the Fuente de Vida Ministry in Honduras that rescues girls, ages 2-18, from abusive homes and educates these young girls.

Race will go on rain or shine

Race is not timed but does have a time limit of 1 hour and 15 minutes

The race will start at 9:30am but packet pick up and paper registration will start at 8am.

This walk is a great way to explore some of our more moderate hiking options while learning about our colorful spring flowers. You’ll be surprised to find such a variety of plants within such a small area of the Park. Along the way, we’ll also touch on other local flora and fauna. This hike is considered moderate. You will descend the Four Seasons Trail from the top lot, but you won’t have to hike back up.  Transportation will be provided.
We  love our visitors’ furry friends, but we do understand that some hike participants may consider animals a distraction on the trail. Pets are not allowed on Naturalist Niche hikes because of this.
Advance registration is required. Cost includes Park admission for the day.

Each Tuesday and Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., April through October, trained volunteer guides lead small groups of participants along woodland trails and through a variety of forest types. Depending on the season, topics of discussion include wildflowers, plant and tree identification, natural history, and the cultural and land use history of The North Carolina Arboretum. Guides may include areas such as the Natural Garden Trail and Bent Creek.

Programs are held rain or shine and participants should dress appropriately for the weather. Individuals should also wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Walks last 1.5- 2.5 hours, depending upon the interest of the group, and are approximately one to two miles in length. Due to length and content, this program is not recommended for children under 8 years of age.

Walks begin in the Baker Exhibit Center Lobby and space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Groups of five or more are required to pre-register by calling 828-665-2492. Walks are FREE, however, donations to The North Carolina Arboretum Society are appreciated. Regular parking fees apply. Arboretum Society Members always park free.

Due to size limitations of the tours, groups of 10 or more are required to book a private guided trail tour.

On exhibit Saturdays and Sundays from 12 – 4 p.m., Rocky Cove Railroad is a G-Scale (garden scale) model train that demonstrates the coming of trains to western North Carolina at the turn of the 20th century. The exhibit is located below the Grand Promenade. Please note, Rocky Cove Railroad will not operate in rainy or wet conditions.

Don’t miss out on the only 5K race in Asheville that ends with a Falafel sandwich. Run with us on Sunday, April 15 at 10 am at the Asheville Jewish Community Center at 236 Charlotte Street! A local favorite, the Falafel 5K was voted one of WNC’s BEST road races in the 2015 Mountain Xpress “Best of WNC” poll. All registered participants for the 5K will receive a race shirt (unless the t-shirt free option is chosen).
