Sign up for the ultimate stargazing experience!
The Stargazer’s Journey is designed to allow a small intimate group to work directly with an astronomical educator while they observe the night sky.
The evening will begin at our restaurant, Smiley’s, where your educator will tell you about the history of our facilities while you enjoy dinner.
You will then move to our south observation deck to watch the sunset with 360-degree views of the Pisgah National Forest including views of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Once the skies become dark, the event will move to our sky deck where optical telescopes will be ready to provide stunning views of distant objects in the night sky. We will select planets, nebulae, galaxies, stars, and clusters from the best of what the season has to offer.
(Please note: Stargazer’s Journey is “Rain or Shine” and alternate programming will be provided should weather conditions be unfavorable for night sky observing)

Aaron Wood is quite the renaissance music man. He grew up steeped in the traditions of blues and folk music of North Carolina. His father has shared the stage with the likes of Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley and performed at The Grand Ole Opry, taking Aaron with him every chance he got. It didn’t take long before the music took hold, and he studied any kind of music he could get his fingers on.
One look at the long list of artists he has shared the stage with exemplifies his diversity and respect from his musical peers. From Jimmy Martin to Leon Russel, R.L. Burnside to Warren Haynes, Sara Evans to Carlos Santana, Aaron has played with and learned from some of those who have helped shaped music into what it is today.
Each Wednesday features a different performer joining Woody on stage.

Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Steve Miller was a mainstay of the San Francisco music scene that upended American culture in the late ’60s. With albums like Children of the Future, Sailor, and Brave New World, Miller perfected a psychedelic blues sound that drew on the deepest sources of American roots music and simultaneously articulated a compelling vision of what music and society could be in the years to come.
In the ’70s, Miller crafted a brand of rock ‘n’ roll music that was polished, exciting, and irresistible. Hit followed hit in an endless flow: “The Joker,” “Livin’ in the USA,” “Take the Money and Run,” “Rock’n Me,” “Fly Like an Eagle,” “Jet Airliner,” “Jungle Love,” and “Abracadabra” among them. To this day, these songs are instantly recognizable when they come on the radio-and are impossible not to sing along with.

Muddy Ruckus is a duo of darkly inventive americana rock. Guitarist Ryan Flaherty and percussionist Erika Stahl, of Portland, Maine, play a grungy style of railroad indie punk blues and brimstone folk. The band blends rootsy guitar and edgy percussion on a suitcase drum kit, and is known for a full rock band sound, despite their duo status. They season their music with ‘in-your-face’ lyrics salted by the eastern old ports and mud of the Mississippi River where Flaherty grew up.
Muddy Ruckus was awarded “Best in State of Maine 2015” by the New England Music Awards. Their second album, Pretty Bones, was awarded 2106 “Album of the Year” by Red Line Roots. The band was also awarded 2017 “Rock N’ Roller’s of the Year” by RLR.
