Belly Dance: Improving Energy and Posture
Feb 21 @ 6:45 pm – 8:00 pm
The Shift Studio

I stumbled upon belly dance almost 6 years ago after breaking my wrist and going through a divorce, and it was one of the most healing experiences I’ve ever had. Belly dance improves the flow of our life force energy which is innately healing. I hope belly dance can be as nurturing and healing for you as it has been for me!…

This 7 week series is for the absolute beginner or those wishing to review the basics. Drop-in or come for the whole series. Belly dance is for anyone. Each class will begin with a warm up and stretching. I will review basic moves and build on those moves throughout the series. We will work on some basic choreography with 1 song towards the end of the series. If you’ve never taken a class with me before your first class is $10. Wear similar clothes that you would to a yoga class- there is no need to expose your belly. Hip scarves are optional. If you are under 18 y.o. I ask that you have a parent or legal guardian attend the class as well.

No dance experience is needed. No class on January 24th- if there is enough interest I may stream an online class for Q & A.

The Moth: True Stories Told Live (Theme: Love Hurts)
Feb 21 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
The Mothlight

***Tickets become available one week before the show, at 3pm ET.

LOVE HURTS: Prepare a five-minute tale about a love that made you go OUCH. The agony of deferred love! The misery of good love, gone bad! The anguish of one-way love! Bring stories of your heart, kicked to the curb by the people or places or things you love…or used to love. Love that “Hurts So Good” also welcome.

https://themoth.org/events/love-hurts-asheville-2

For more details on preparing a Moth story if you’d like to participate, follow the link above.

It is brilliant and quietly addictive” – The London Guardian

“New York’s hottest and hippest literary ticket” – The Wall Street Journal

The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organization dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling. It is a celebration of both the raconteur, who breathes fire into true tales of ordinary life, and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. At the center of each performance is, of course, the story – and The Moth’s directors work with each storyteller to find, shape and present it.

Since its launch in 1997, The Moth has presented thousands of stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide.

Moth shows are renowned for the great range of human experience they showcase. Each show starts with a theme, and the storytellers explore it, often in unexpected ways. Since each story is true and every voice authentic, the shows dance between documentary and theater, creating a unique, intimate, and often enlightening experience for the audience.

Moth stories dissolve socio-economic barriers, expose vulnerabilities, and quietly suggest ways to overcome challenges and see with new eyes.

Groove on OM
Feb 21 @ 7:15 pm – 8:15 pm
Waynesville Bellydance at Raqs Beledi

My name is Amber and I’m the owner of Kleidoscope Yoga. I’m an instructor, artist, dancer, cat lover, coffee consumer and I’m over the moon to introduce you back (or to) Groove on OM!

For an hour once a week I’m offering you a safe space where you can honor yourself with no pressures, no expectations, no judgment, no worries – just a load of dancing FUN with some great gals!

It’s a safe space to be yourself. What we do here (even as silly as we may look or seem) stays here. And there’s no choreography so even if you feel like you can’t dance – just find what movements your body craves and GO FOR IT!

I encourage singing, bouncing, hootin’, hollerin’, shaking and whatever else strikes your fancy.

What I want is for Groove on OM to grow so more women like you and I have a place to PLAY, let loose, lift each other up and create some powerful magic together. So gather up your girlfriends, sisters, aunts or mothers and daughters (as long as they’re 18)!

This six-week session runs January 31st – March 7th. The drop-in price is $13 cash only please but you can save $18 if you purchase the entire 6-week session for only $60! It’s a great commitment to make time for yourself, with your girlfriends, to get exercise or blow off steam. To purchase the session, my safe paypal link is below. Of course, cash or checks are always accepted as well for the full session price.

If you want to try #GrooveonOM once for the drop in price and decide you love it – you can still purchase the rest of the weeks in the session as a bundle at $10 a class! Even if you join us in the 3rd week – you’ll still save some cashola!

If you’re like me, dancing feels like it brings a fresh perspective to life. It releases stagnant energy and makes space for new ideas. It’s MAGIC And DAMN if it doesn’t feel good!

Dancing has been a beautiful form of communication since the beginning of time and there IS something primal about letting your body just move to the music without a care in the world. I believe you just have to find that comfortable space to let that happen.

We will take a few moments to greet one another, set intentions and then get our groove on with all sorts of different types of music. There is no choreography, just the opportunity to let your body find it’s rhythm and flow no matter what that feels or looks like!

****Just a quick note. Please respect that there will be no drugs or alcohol permitted, you must be at least 18 years of age and what happens at Groove on OM stays at Groove on OM.***

Again, here is the pricing for you – $60 for 6 weeks beginning Thursday, January 31st or $13 cash to drop in.

Dress comfortably – or in costume – come dressed in a way that calls to you.

I can’t wait to see you there and by the way, if you have a tune that gets your booty shakin’ let me know! I’m always looking for music to add to the playlist.

Namaste ♥

Footloose
Feb 21 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm
Asheville Community Theatre

Music by Tom Snow; Lyrics by Dean Pitchford; Stage Adaptation by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie

A musical version of the 1984 film! When teenager Ren McCormack moves from Chicago to a small town, he isn’t prepared for the stifling local laws, including a ban on dancing and rock music instituted by the local preacher. As he struggles to fit in, he encourages his classmates to defy the local pastor and call for a rock’n’roll prom. Fist pump!

“Footloose” combines songs from the hit 1984 soundtrack with dynamic new songs – and though it might seem like just a lot of fun, it also celebrates the wisdom of opening minds and listening to the voices of young people. Director Jerry Crouch, music director Lynda Ferrell Shuler, and choreographer Tina Pisano-Foor have put together an incredible cast of students and adults from our community to bring “Footloose” to life!

Dead Horses

At fifteen, Dead Horses frontwoman Sarah Vos’ world turned upside down. Raised in a strict, fundamentalist home, Vos lost everything when she and her family were expelled from the rural Wisconsin church where her father had long served as pastor. What happened next is the story of Dead Horses’ stunning new album, My Mother the Moon, a record full of trauma and triumph, despair and hope, pain and resilience.

Blending elements of traditional roots with contemporary indie folk, Dead Horses writes music that is both familiar and unexpected, unflinchingly honest in its portrayal of modern American life, yet optimistic in its unshakable faith in brighter days to come.
Described by NPR Music as “evocative, empathetic storytelling,” My Mother the Moon earned a spot in No Depression’s “Best Roots Music Albums of 2018” list, and Rolling Stone Country declared the Wisconsin-based duo an “Artist You Need to Know.”

The Brother Brothers

The Brother Brothers carry the folk tradition for a new generation. Identical twins David and Adam Moss honor contemporary aches with the nostalgic tenderness of another time on their debut full-length album, SOME PEOPLE I KNOW, out October 19, 2018 on Compass Records. Their stunning songcraft blends masterfully gentle guitar, cello and five-string fiddle with the sublime sort of two-part harmonies only brothers can carry. Their palpably fraternal stage presence and wonderfully familiar heart have earned repute among a modern folk scene; The Brother Brothers have opened for Big Thief, Lake Street Dive, Shakey Graves, and in the fall of 2019, embarked on a 26-date national tour supporting I’m With Her.

Recorded at Mark Ettinger’s Lethe Lounge in New York City with producer Robin Macmillan and engineer Jefferson Hamer, The Brother Brothers capably capture a modern snapshot of their surroundings. Yet, SOME PEOPLE I KNOW retains a timeless feel – something that the brothers were aiming for.

“I just want people to listen to it once and want to listen to it again,” David says of the album. “And every time they listen to it, I want them to find something new and in some way relate it to themselves. Whether they’re listening to it today or in 40 years, I hope it will make them feel just the same.”

“wonderful… fabulous old-time playing and sibling harmony.” – NPR / Folk Alley

“…capturing their natural harmonies and evocative lyricism, reflecting a timeless sound and spirit.” – Relix

“a duo that pairs tasteful harmony vocals with two-person musical arrangements that weave together bluegrass and the darker side of folk.” – No Depression

“The Brother Brothers deserve their own phylum upon an advanced musical strain not yet categorized on the roots music family tree. They are the true sound of roots music evolving.” – Saving Country Music
