Bryan Stevenson
Apr 25 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
UNC Asheville

Bryan Stevenson, the attorney, activist and best-selling author who led the team that created the first national memorial to victims of lynching, will speak at UNC Asheville’s Kimmel Arena at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 25. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

The talk is free and open to everyone, with support from The David and Lin Brown Visionary Lecture Series and The Van Winkle Law Firm Public Policy Lectures.

Stevenson is the founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI). Under his leadership, EJI has won major legal challenges eliminating excessive and unfair sentencing, exonerating innocent death row prisoners, confronting abuse of the incarcerated and the mentally ill and aiding children prosecuted as adults. Stevenson recently won a historic ruling in the U.S. Supreme Court banning mandatory life-without-parole sentences for all children 17 or younger. He also is the author of award-winning New York Times best-selling book “Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption.”

A professor of clinical law at the New York University School of Law, Stevenson has been awarded the American Bar Association’s highest honor, the ABA Medal, and the National Medal of Liberty from the American Civil Liberties Union – he was nominated for the latter by U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Stevens. Stevenson has been dubbed “America’s Nelson Mandela” by none other than Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa.

Stevenson also has become a national leader in advocacy and public education about mass incarceration and its roots. In April 2018, EJI opened a new museum, The Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration, built on the site of a former slave warehouse in downtown Montgomery. This is a companion to a national memorial to victims of lynching, The National Memorial for Peace and Justice, which opened at the same time, gaining national news coverage, including a feature by Oprah Winfrey on CBS’ 60 Minutes.

Stevenson, who has been awarded the prestigious MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Prize and 34 honorary degrees, is a graduate of the Harvard Law School.

His lecture at UNC Asheville is a special event as part of the installation celebration for UNC Asheville’s Chancellor Nancy J. Cable.

Seating at this free, unticketed event is first-come, first served. Kimmel Arena’s “Clear Bag Policy” will be in effect; please do not bring backpacks. Parking is limited at UNC Asheville; please consider using public transportation.

Neo-Pastiche: Changes in American Music
Apr 25 @ 7:00 pm – Apr 28 @ 10:00 pm
Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center

Neo-Pastiche: Changes in American Music is a critical musical gathering featuring presentations by living American composers and performers whose work comes from outside standard academic or popular music contexts. Bringing in a diverse group of musicians from around the country, focusing particularly on New York City and local Asheville artists, the festival will take place April 25th through 28th, 2019 at the Black Mountain College Museum and Arts Center.

The festival showcases the S.E.M. Ensemble which under the direction of Petr Kotik and with the help of pianist Joe Kubera & percussionist Chris Nappi will present large scale works by Morton Feldman, Julius Eastman and John Cage. Other performers include Eugene Chadbourne, Jeff Witscher, Sarah Louise, DeForrest Brown Jr., Nick James Scavo, Jaclyn Miller, Theodore Cale Schafer, Motown Willie, Kimathi Moore & Elizabeth Lang, Anka, and more!

In the spirit of Western North Carolina’s longstanding history as a point of inspiration and creative and collective self-determination, Neo-Pastiche: Changes in American Music hopes to invite a refreshed sense of what contemporary American music can be – where music can be engaged not only in terms of gallery art or popular culture, but also as a discursive field in its own right.

Rainbow Kitten Surprise and all five of its members hail from the mountains of Boone, North Carolina. Their engaging and distinct live performances have led to stand out sets at festivals such as Bonnaroo, firefly, Shaky Knees, Hangout, Sasquatch, and Austin City Limits among others. The band worked with GRAMMY award-winning producer Jay Joyce (Cage the Elephant, Sleeper Agent) on their Elektra debut, How to: Friend, Love, Freefall, available everywhere on April 6th.

BoomBox

A little house, a little blues, a little funk, a little rock, and a whole lot of soul blast through BoomBox.

Since first emerging in 2004, founder, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Zion Rock Godchaux has been quietly seasoning this simmering recipe to perfection. However, it reaches a boiling point on his forthcoming 2018 album, Western Voodoo [Heart of Gold Records].

At the same time, the Muscle Shoals, AL native stays true to what attracted countless fans in the first place.

“I remain open to anything you would hear coming out of a boombox,” he explains. “There are a lot of different vibes and angles, but it still adheres to a universal rhythm. This new record is the most musical and varied, yet it’s tightly wound in respect to that syncopation. There are only a few rules. It should be heavy groove. It should make you want to move. Overall, I’ve further developed the sound people are used to.”

Following up 2016’s fan favorite Bits & Pieces, the artist found himself at something of a crossroads. Longtime collaborator Russ Randolph amicably parted ways with the band at the end of the year. For the first time, Godchaux would solely produce the bulk of a BoomBox record by himself inside of his new studio, while DJ Harry joined on tour in January 2017. Another first, he even performed live bass on the album, opening up the creative palette dramatically.

“I’ve learned more about engineering and the technical aspects of recording. It’s been a time of soul searching. I can follow any Ideas that I want to. So there’s a lot more organic instrumentation. I’m just trying to develop more sonic real.” Appropriately, he dubs the sound of Western Voodoo, “Dirty Disco Blues.” Within that realm, Godchaux fuses a funky strut with electronic energy and danceable swagger powerful enough to cast a spell of its own.

“You hear about different forms of magic around the world,” he goes on. “The West, in general, has its own voodoo influenced by the blues. That’s what shaped me as a musician growing up in this country. It’s hard to put in the words, but you know it when you hear it.”

You hear it in everything that BoomBox has done thus far. Over the course of four albums, the group has become a streaming favorite with numerous tracks cracking a million plays on Spotify. Moreover, they’ve made audiences groove everywhere from Electric Forest and Hangout Music Festival to High Sierra Music Festival. To welcome DJ Harry into the fold, they performed 75 shows in 2017, with that number expected to grow in 2018.

“Harry picked up everything in a really short amount of time,” he explains. “The parties are just as hot, if not hotter. The music is getting tighter. He stepped in and kept the plane in the air.”

In the end, the new music kicks off the brightest and boldest chapter yet for Godchaux. “Our best side is somewhat medicinal,” he leaves off. “All of the rhythms, melodies, and frequencies add up to these healing properties. I hope people feel rejuvenated and re-focused on some level when they hear us. That’s Western Voodoo.”
