Award-Winning Debut Novelist Amanda Kabak Brings Her Innovative LGBTQIA
Feb 17 @ 3:00 pm

Amanda Kabak, winner of the Arcturus Chicago Review of Books Al-Simak Award for fiction, will visit Asheville on February 17 to read from her innovative LGBTQIA+ debut novel, The Mathematics of Change.

The Mathematics of Change is an emotional page-turner featuring three women-identified characters at midlife whose lives are at critical crossroads—their pasts and their futures intersecting in ways that create both drama and opportunity. Kabak’s characters hold deep-seated ideas of who they are, but they are forced to question these ideas in different and very difficult ways. “Change is inevitable,” says Kabak, “but that doesn’t make it easy, especially on an emotional level. When that change sparks self-reflection and doubt, it is even worse.”

As an own-voices novel, Mathematics has strong appeals to feminist and LGBTQIA+ readers. It offers important reflections on female friendship, looking at the intimate connections women make with each other in order to survive and learn about themselves and what they want. It investigates the fluidity of sexuality for women-identified people, as well as the intersections of gender identity, emotional intimacy, and sexuality. Central protagonist Mitch is a woman not often represented in fiction—woman-identifying, masculine-presenting, with an unexpectedly fluid sexuality, whose intellect is continuously confronted by deeply emotional connection. This is a book that shows women as they are: human, flawed, fierce, and the genuine movers in their own lives and their communities.

Chicago native Amanda Kabak is a Pushcart Prize nominee and the 2017 winner of the Chicago Review of Books Al-Simak Award for Fiction. She has had stories published in Midwestern Gothic, The Quotable, Perceptions Magazine, and other print and online periodicals.

Firestorm Books and Coffee (610 Hayward Road) will host Kabak’s reading on February 17 at 3:00 p.m. The author will answer questions from the audience and sign copies of her novel following the reading. Local novelist Sarah Blackman (Hex; Mother Box and Other Tales) will introduce Kabak and moderate the question-and-answer period.

5th Annual Earth Day Film Screening and Panel Discussion
Apr 22 @ 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Organic Growers School is pleased to announce a screening of the award-winning documentary Look and See: A Portrait of Wendell Berry for the 5th annual Earth Day Film event on April 22, 2018 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm at Lenoir-Rhyne University’s Asheville Campus in downtown Asheville. The event is by donation at the door. There are no advanced sales or reservations required.

Look and See is a cinematic portrait of the changing landscapes and shifting values of rural America in the era of industrial agriculture, as seen through the mind’s eye of writer, farmer, and activist, Wendell Berry. Filmed in and around the rolling hills of Henry County, Kentucky – where Berry has lived and farmed since the mid-1960’s, filmmaker Laura Dunn skillfully weaves Berry’s poetic and prescient words with gorgeous cinematography and the testimonies of his family and neighbors, all of whom are being deeply affected by the industrial and economic changes to their agrarian way of life.

The beginning of the film describes the transformation of small-scale farming into an industrialized food system,  with just 4% of the population producing food for all. Berry states that “when the people disappear, the values disappear with them. With the transformation of farming into an industrial system, it has lost its appeal and connection to the land.”

In a 2016 interview with Laura Dunn in The Bluegrass Situation, Dunn asserts that “there’s a huge disconnect between urban and rural … You can buy all the organic food you want at Whole Foods, but if you have a total disregard for the culture where that food is made, there’s a degradation of the people, there’s a degradation of the land, and ultimately, your consumption is not going to have any effect, if the economics are such that people think they can’t farm.”

Often called “a prophet for rural America,” Berry has long been a voice for the communities that are so often overlooked by the media. LOOK AND SEE subverts biopic conventions and immerses audiences into Berry’s world, providing a space for talking about the land and those who sustain it.

Following the film, Organic Growers School will host a panel of our region’s leading organic farming and environmental activists to discuss the film’s relevance to Western North Carolina.  The panel will be emceed by local filmmaker and activist, Hannah Furgiuele. Follow the links to learn more about each of our panelists and the important work they are doing.

Book Release: NOC Stories
Apr 28 @ 4:30 pm – 7:30 pm
Nantahala Outdoors Center

Come out to Nantahala Outdoor Center to hear some of NOC’s Stories, shared by founder and author Payson Kennedy, along with several co-authors. This book describes Nantahala Outdoor Center’s history, with a focus on the first 25 years, a time of explosive growth in whitewater sports and instruction. These stories have become NOC’s legacy, and this book is an attempt to collect and make sense of them. However, the book also features a very human element, a tinge of adventure that sets it apart from your standard history text. The stories in this book, in addition to their historical value, offer a testament to the experiential aspect of working at NOC.
