To celebrate Homebrewed Christianity’s 10th year of podcasting, we wanted to do something a little special for this edition of #theologybeercamp. This year, we will be hosting Theology Beer Camp in an actual brewery, in HBC’s home state.

Each year, the Chamber brings together the mayors of the region and members of the Asheville City Council and Buncombe County Board of Commissioners to meet and network with the Western North Carolina’s business community. “We the People 2.0” is about the loss of democracy in the United States. The story unfolds through the eyes of rural people and sacrifice zones in urban communities who have faced decades of toxic dumps, drilling and mines in their communities. These people come to understand that the reason they can’t stop the destruction is that the US has become an oligarchy, run by the corporate few who ignore the rights and will of the people. These people are frontally challenging our corporate state; thereby saving nature and themselves. Thomas Linzey, a nonprofit attorney’s inspiring words shows how, we, the people, can turn this around and lay claim to our democracy. This movement is building as you read this, not just in this country but around the world; this film shows how and where it all began.

They’ll break down an entire front quarter of dry aged Apple Brandy Beef with the farmer himself, Seth Church. Amy Greene was born and raised in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, and she began writing stories about the people of Appalachia from a very young age. Her debut novel, “Bloodroot” (2010), was named among Booklist’s Top 10 Debut Novels and received the Weatherford Award for fiction. Greene will speak about her writing process and what gives character to her Appalachian novels.

Asheville, North Carolina-based photographer and author Tim Barnwell’s will give a talk on his book Great Smoky Mountains Vistas: A Guide, with Mountain Peak Identifications, for What to See and Do In and Around the National Park. When he started his mountain identification project along the Blue Ridge Parkway he had no idea that it would take seven years to complete his Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains projects.
The Smokies book includes mountain peak identifications from overlooks along Highway 441/Newfound Gap Road, in Cataloochee Valley, Cades Cove, from the Foothills Parkway and Blue Ridge Parkway, and aerial views of the park and its environs. It also covers area around the park worth visiting including Max Patch, the Foothills Parkway, the Cherohala Skyway, Maggie Valley and Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The book is a truly unique project, the only one of its kind and scope in the country, and possibly the world.
Mr. Barnwell’s other books include, The Face of Appalachia: The Appalachian Farm in Photographs, On Earths Furrowed Brow: The Mountain Farm in Photographs, and Hands in Harmony: Traditional Crafts and Music in Appalachia, and Blue Ridge Parkway Vistas: A Comprehensive Identification Guide to What You See from the Many Overlooks.

The Lung Buster Time Trial Series is a five-part competitive time trial racing series of cycling events in Western North Carolina held with the intent of providing all participants a professional racer experience, no matter how fast you are. All levels and abilities of cyclists are invited to participate!

Our unique mix of different racing environments allows riders of different strengths and focuses to level the playing field amongst competitors. Also, having seven separate events means that one poor showing won’t decimate your opportunity to do well in the series as a whole. So as to not leave out any cyclist: whether you’re an elite time trailer or a recreational rider on your road bike wanting to prove your merit in our Merckx/Standard division, we have both categories.

Lung Buster: The very name embodies pushing one’s mind and body to its aerobic limits. And that’s exactly what we expect to see. This series is a great test for participants of all abilities, and a great way to gauge your standing and progress in your cycling endeavors. With awards, medals, cash, bragging rights, and course records all on the line, you better not leave your inner competitor at home! With the kinds of hard efforts and fast times we’ve seen in the Lung Buster Series over the years, we feel that such braggadocio is warranted, and expect 2018 to bring an abundance of the same.

We are excited to partner with the Dry Ridge Museum to bring you an evening of storytelling with Dr. Delanna Reed. Dr. Reed, a member of the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild, is a professor with the Department of Communication and Performance at East Tennessee State University.

Join us as we bring folk tales of southern Appalachia to life through spoken word, weaving in stories of the Vance family. David Vance Sr. and his wife Priscilla Brank settled in the Reems Creek Valley in the 1790s. Their farm eventually totaled almost 900 acres including 18 enslaved people. These stories celebrate the traditions and cultures of the people who called the North Carolina mountains home in the early 1800s.

The Asheville Tourists are a minor league baseball team based in Asheville, North Carolina. They play in the Class A South Atlantic League and have been a farm team of the Colorado Rockies since 1994.

Asheville teams have played under the Tourists moniker in different leagues and classifications for decades, with the earliest dating to 1897. The current team has played continuously in what is now known as the South Atlantic League since 1976. They have won three league championships, first in 1984 and most recently in 2014. Previous Tourists teams won a total of four additional championships.

The Tourists play home games at McCormick Field. The park opened in 1924, renovated in 1959, and renovated again for the 1992 season. McCormick Field seats 4,000 fans, and is notable for the scoreboard which reads “Visitors” in the guest slot and “Tourists” in the home slot
