Frank and Allie Lee (Bryson City, NC) are a harmony-powered old time duo. Their April 2018 release, Roll On, Clouds, showcases their favorite songs from over two years of performing together. These pieces range from blues tradition (“Somebody On Your Bond,” “Roll and Tumble”) to bluegrass classics (“Standing on a Mountain,” “Cabin on a Hill”), yet remain rooted in the old time aesthetic. Frank’s nylon string fretless banjo is the dominant instrument, with guitar, slide guitar, and Allie’s banjo and harmonica adding to the musical texture.

Frank and Allie, core duo of longstanding string band The Freight Hoppers, have traveled extensively as touring musicians. Frank, a founding member of The Freight Hoppers, has impressed audiences all over the United States, Canada, and northern Europe with his signature clawhammer sound. Allie is a founding member of The Whipstitch Sallies, a band from Indiana that toured in the Midwest, North Carolina, Colorado, and Hawaii. Together, the pair is a powerhouse duo with appearances planned across the country, and they toured France for two weeks in May 2018.

In addition to performing, Frank and Allie screen print music-themed t-shirts, available on their website. They also organize an old time music retreat in the Great Smoky Mountains in late March called the Banjo-Fiddle Frolic.

Roll On, Clouds is available at www.frankandallie.com, as well as CD Baby, iTunes, & Spotify,

The Nth Power at Sierra Nevada
Apr 20 @ 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm
Sierra Nevada Mills River

The Nth Power
-Saturday, April 20th-
Show: 7:00-9:30pm
Sierra Nevada Mills River
-Free Show-
-All Ages

Proving that soul music can be exponentially greater than the sum of its parts, The Nth Power is on a mission to share the light. Formed during an impromptu late-night jam at Jazz Fest 2012 in New Orleans, the relentlessly funky and soulful band believes in music as a higher power tapping into an energy that is simultaneously sexy and spiritual, with songs that will inspire audiences to dance, groove, make love or just stand there with goose bumps.

The trio hails from diverse musical backgrounds, races and creeds. Female powerhouse Nikki Glaspie was Beyonce’s world-touring drummer for five years before she joined Ivan Nevilles New Orleans funk outfit, Dumpstaphunk. Bassist Nate Edgar of Groovechild and John Browns Body perfectly compliments singer and guitarist Nick Cassarino who came from the Jennifer Hartswick Band and toured with Big Daddy Kane.

Western Carolina Writers
Apr 20 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
The Poe House

NO COVER

Western Carolina Writers
Featuring: Jesse Frizsell, Thomas Yon and Nick Mac.

With a shared passion for music and a knack for writing lyrics that stick to the ribs, the Western Carolina Writers take you on an emotional roller coaster from start to finish. From reminiscing an old love while drinking “beer in the shower” to cutting you deep with “Fail at failing” to throwing em back and getting “boozed and nasty”, this trio of songsmiths cover all the bases. So pick your poison and saddle up, and if you should find yourself wooing like Ric Flair by the end of the night well, you’ll have the WCW crew to thank for that.

Jesse Frizsell
Hailing from the mountains of western North Carolina, guitarist and songwriter Jesse Frizsell seamlessly combines aspects of modern and classic country with the smooth harmonies and feel heard in today’s biggest chart toppers, with driving rhythms, smooth harmonies and shimmering guitars. Frizsell has been a musician and songwriter for the majority of his life, in his own solo endeavors and as a leading member of local North Carolina bands.
Jesse has released a full-length album, “This Is A War” as well as a two song EP, “A Couple of Songs for Drinking”, both in 2018. Popular singles include “Stupid Kids”, “Reckless” and “Make Our Getaway”. All of the above titles are available for streaming or download on iTunes, Apple Music and Spotify.

Thomas Yon
Born in Winterhaven, Fl., but raised in Bryson City, NC.
His parents started a Boiled Peanut business in a shack just
up the road from NOC when Thomas was just a toddler.
His humble upbringing was merely earned from peanuts.
He started singing on stage at the age of 8 at local venues and even at Fairs, notably the Georgia Mountain Fair at the age of 10.
But of course he grew up with love for whitewater, as he was always found in a kayak or raft guiding. He took a break from singing and chased after waterfalls for a few years bringing on 1st and 2nd place in many National Whitewater Competitions. In 2014 he settled in Asheville and has been writing/composing originals ever since.Always active in the music scene between singing at and/or hosting open mics & singer-songwriter showcases, laying harmonies for other local artists, Duo & Trio sets, and of course with his Band Heirlüm that came together soon after singing at
the Muscle Shoals Tribute hosted by the Grey Eagle in 2015.

Nick Mac
Candler native that has been influenced by just about anything under the sun but resides mostly in southern rock and country. Nick had a short run with the Apple Blue Horse Band. These days he’s trying to make his way as a solo artist. His music is largely inspired by love, good times and personal experiences.

Bleary (Nashville)
Shoe-gaze, rock
https://bleary.bandcamp.com/track/ghosts
“Ghosts” is the first single off Bleary’s upcoming Gates EP, a six-song release that takes the formulas seen on their Winter Demos release, ups the clarity, and turns the catchiness dial to eleven… “Ghosts” is second on the EP – lyrically introspective, as Mercer begins “I can’t relate to the voices in my head, and I can’t get out of bed,” buffeted by massive, dreamy guitars. The chorus is an explosion – guitars soar as Mercer recounts being “surrounded by [his] ghosts at night.” The song is contagiously energetic, compulsively kinetic, subverting the emotionally-driven words being broadcast. But despite the brooding lyrics, I’m filing this baby into my running playlist. Catch you in a few miles.” – Jordan Reyes, Ears to Feed

Dirty Soul Revival Live at Triskelion
Apr 20 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Triskelion Brewing Company

April 20th… This is the day we officially open back up the Beer Garden Sound stage… and we decided to open it up with a Bang…

We welcome out our first full band of the year, Dirty Soul Revival.

“The Dirty Soul Revival unites, and quite possibly, resurrects the Southern Rock n Roll experience. This band conveys the heart and soul of Rock n’ Roll’s past that today’s radio airwaves are lacking. From Blues Rock, to Hard Rock, to Stoner Rock with a blend of Funk; SOUL is what The Dirty Soul Revival is all about! “
– David Gibson, Ocean Media

The name says it all. Music is expression and only through expression is music kept alive. Forget genres, forget the endless pandering to the masses, forget the formulaic radio vomit that has been created in the studio for the sole purpose of separating you from your dollar. This is music made for people who want to see people bleed, hear people cry, watch someone fail while wishing them to succeed. This band was founded on hate. Love. Fear.

The band was founded in 2014 by husband and wife duo Abraham and Jenni Lynn Anderson jamming in their attic. As the band evolved so did it’s members resulting in Abraham on slide guitar and vocals, Brandon Hill on lead guitar, and Wilson Wedge on Drums. The sound has changed over the years but always leans on the cornerstones of American music. Blues, Country, Rock and roll, Soul, and the unnamable line that connects music of all backgrounds.

The Dirty Soul Revival has kept a solid touring schedule since it’s inception and has shared the stage with the likes of Blackberry Smoke, The Kentucky Headhunters, Shooter Jennings, Black Stone Cherry, Atlanta Rhythm Section, and more. They have rallied a loyal fanbase in their hometown of Asheville, NC and throughout the southeast while touring across the U.S.

Jeff Sipe’s Electric Buddha 420 Jam w Tools on Stools
Apr 20 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm
185 King Street

Jeff Sipe is bringing the Elecrric Buddha back for a 420 Jam Session. Tools on stools will open the show at 8pm.

Jeff Sipe, is a founding member of Aquarium Rescue Unit along with Col. Bruce Hampton. He also played with the self-applied Cajun Slamgrass Band Leftover Salmon and in the Zambiland Orchestra, an experimental big band featuring members of Phish, Widespread Panic and others.

Recently Jeff teamed up with long time friend Jimmy Herring and John McLaughlin to play on their Meeting of The Spirits Tour along with Gary Husband, Ranjit Barot, Etienne Mbappe, Kevin Scott, Matthew Dutot Slocum and Jason Crosby. He has been said by Herring to “live for music” and remains his first choice among drummers with whom to play.

For the Electric Buddha Jeff will be joined by Mellissa Reaves. Melissa Reaves is known to audiences throughout the US and Europe for her deconstructionist approach to rock-n-roll. Reaves has amassed a word-of-mouth following most notably for her experimental guitar work but also for her propensity towards spontaneity and seamless improvisation during live performance. She deconstructs the blues, pushes jazz to the outer limits and burns through rock-n-roll like the love child of Jerry Lee Lewis and the MC5. Most recently Melissa’s, “New Rock Song” was placed on the 55th GRAMMY Awards nomination ballot for Best Rock Performance.

Electric Buddha also features Mark McDaniel, and Howie Johnson.

Off With Your Radiohead

With members stemming from deep roots in the eclectic Asheville music scene, and currently packing the region’s most sought after venues, Off With Your Radiohead is a tribute group dedicated to mastering Radiohead’s entire discography, one album at a time.

After mesmerizing a crowd of unsuspecting Radiohead fans at an OK Computer tribute show last fall, frontman Jeff Thompson knew he was onto something. What was intended to be a one-off homage to the greatest rock record of all time quickly developed into a permanent ensemble. Now three albums ( and many other hand picked songs) in, the five-piece approaches even the most complex arrangements note for note, with a reverence that extends to the finest tone.

Phosphorescent //Orange Peel Asheville, NC
Apr 20 @ 9:00 pm – Apr 21 @ 12:00 am
The Orange Peel

Phosphorescent
Show: 9pm
Doors: 8pm
$20 – $25
Ages 18+

Tickets & Info: www.theorangepeel.net/event/phosphorescent/

In the five years since Matthew Houck’s last record as Phosphorescent he fell in love, left New York for Nashville, became a father, built a studio from the ground up by hand, and became a father again. Oh, and somewhere along the way, he nearly died of meningitis. Life, love, new beginnings, death—“it’s laughable, honestly, the amount of ‘major life events’ we could chalk up if we were keeping score,” Houck says. “A lot can happen in five years.”

On C’est La Vie, Houck’s first album of new Phosphorescent material since 2013’s gorgeous career defining and critically acclaimed Muchacho, he takes stock of these changes through the luminous, star-kissed sounds he has spent a career refining. By now, Houck has mastered the contours of this place, as intimate as it is grand, somewhere between dreamed and real, where the great lyrical songwriters meet experimental pioneers and somehow distill into the same person. It is Houck’s own personal musical cosmos, a mixture of the earthy and the wondrous, the troubled and the serene, and by now he commands it with depth and precision. When you ask Houck about the cumulative effect of all this life happening in such a short time, he turns philosophical: ”These significant moments in life can really make you feel your insignificance,” he says. “It’s a paradox I guess, that these wildly profound events simultaneously highlight that maybe none of this matters at all…” On this album, Houck reckons with that void —the vanishing point where our individual significance melts into the stars —and sums it up thusly: C’est La Vie.
