Each Tuesday and Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., April through October, trained volunteer guides lead small groups of participants along woodland trails and through a variety of forest types. Depending on the season, topics of discussion include wildflowers, plant and tree identification, natural history, and the cultural and land use history of The North Carolina Arboretum. Guides may include areas such as the Natural Garden Trail and Bent Creek.
Programs are held rain or shine and participants should dress appropriately for the weather. Individuals should also wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Walks last 1.5- 2.5 hours, depending upon the interest of the group, and are approximately one to two miles in length. Due to length and content, this program is not recommended for children under 8 years of age.
Walks begin in the Baker Exhibit Center Lobby and space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Groups of five or more are required to pre-register by calling 828-665-2492. Walks are FREE, however, donations to The North Carolina Arboretum Society are appreciated. Regular parking fees apply. Arboretum Society Members always park free.
Due to size limitations of the tours, groups of 10 or more are required to book a private guided trail tour.

Highlands Sports Car Club’s Night Series provides an opportunity for competitors to get a mid-week autox fix without taking up an entire day. All events are held on Tuesday evenings at the WNC Agricultural Center located across from Asheville Regional Airport. The same course will be used for all 6 events this season. You must compete in a minimum of 4 events to be eligible for a championship trophy, which will be decided based on points scored in your best 4 events.
The Night Series has been very popular in recent years with entries routinely approaching, and sometimes even breaking 100 drivers. Because of the large turnout combined with the compressed time schedule, we need everyone’s help to pull off a smooth event. That means arriving early enough to get your car registered & tech’ed within the allotted time, having your car ready in the grid before your Run Group starts, and showing up promptly for work assignments.
Event Schedule:
Registration / Check-In: 5:00 – 6:15 pm *
Tech Inspection: 5:00 – 6:15 pm **
Novice Walkthrough: 6:15 pm
Driver’s Meeting: 6:30 pm
First Vehicle Off: 6:45 pm
* Everyone must check-in at the entrance, even if you registered online.
** HSCC now offers an Annual Tech program for our members with at least 2 years of autocross experience. Please contact a club officer for more information. We also honor Annual Tech from surrounding SCCA Regions and other well established independent clubs.

The Adult Education program teaches reading, writing, spelling, and math to adults who read at or below a basic skills level. This program serves approximately 50 students per year. Students come to the Literacy Council because they want to improve job prospects, help their children in school, enroll in a High School Equivalency program, and better navigate the world around them.
Tutoring takes place for one hour twice each week at times and locations that are mutually convenient for students and their tutors.

Jedidiah Robbins is a man on a crusade. From town to town, his Gospel train rides the rails of 1920s Appalachia, spreading the Good News with his daughter and a loyal group of roustabouts in tow. But Jedidiah’s traveling revival company has a secret: in addition to offering the gifts of the Holy Spirit, it also delivers spirits of another kind. Prohibition is in full swing, but The Sword of the Lord train keeps the speakeasies in the towns it visits in business by providing the best that mountain stills have to offer. While beyond the gaze of federal agents, the operation eventually runs afoul of an overzealous small town sheriff and a corrupt judge, setting in motion a series of events that could land them all in chains. Told with haunting lyricism, this is the story of a preacher full of contradictions, a man for whom the way is never straight and narrow. It bends like the river, a river that leads him in the paths of a different brand of righteousness–and perhaps even to salvation.
Terry Roberts’ direct ancestors have lived in the mountains of Western North Carolina since the time of the Revolutionary War. His family farmed in the Big Pine section of Madison County for generations and is also prominent in the Madison County town of Hot Springs, a consistent setting in his novels. Among his forebears are prominent bootleggers and preachers but no one who, like Jedidiah Robbins, combines both preoccupations.
His debut novel, A Short Time to Stay Here, won the Willie Morris Award for Southern Fiction, and his second novel, That Bright Land, won the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award as well as the James Still Award for Writing about the Appalachian South. Born and raised near Weaverville, North Carolina, Roberts is the Director of the National Paideia Center and lives in Asheville, North Carolina.

CLASSES
*****************
7pm: Continuing Class: Level-Up Lindy – Momentum & Moves w/ Sparrow & Keith
Lindy hop is all about momentum- keeping it going or changing it smoothly. We will be exploring and honing in on this concept, shining up our swing outs, getting our connections to click, and expanding our repertoire of ideas.
“Continuing” classes are for those dancers who have cemented the basics of the dance being featured that specific month. This includes knowing (and being able to execute cleanly and consistently) basic footwork and lead/follow skills for that dance. Some continuing classes may require no advance knowledge of a dance. This will be noted in the the class description.
*******************
8 pm: Core Class: Intro to 8 Count Lindy Hop w/ Sparrow & Keith
Learn the foundations of the 8 count Lindy Hop, the high energy dance from Harlem that swept the nation and then the globe. Starting from the very beginning, breaking down the steps and rhythms in easy to understand ways, Keith and Sparrow will get ya on the dance floor and having fun in no time. No partner required and drop in friendly, though of course you’ll learn the most if you start at the beginning of the month and stay till the end!
“Core” lessons stress the fundamentals of swing dancing for beginning dancers. Lessons rotate monthly to focus on a different kind of swing dance (6 Count Lindy, 8 Count Lindy, Charleston, Balboa, etc.). Because good fundamentals are hard to develop in one month, we recommend repeating Core lessons (on the same topic) to help develop the solid foundation you’ll need in continuing classes. Core lessons are also great for intermediate and advanced dancers who want to “get back to basics” or learn a different dancing role (lead vs. follow).

GIFT CERTIFICATES
Do you want to buy a gift certificate for our classes as a gift, or to pre-pay for a block of classes for yourself? You can purchase gift certificates at the door at our weekly dance! They are $40 for a block of 4, and a great way to dive into the fun world of dance.

August 21st
Doors 8pm/Show 9pm

Many a Ship is an indie-folk-rock band with deep roots in the mountains of Western North Carolina. The band formed in the summer of 2017 when music duo Vickie Burick (guitar, vocals) and Sam Brinkley (drums, vocals) joined forces with Josh Gibbs (lap steel) and Andy Gibbon (bass). Many a Ship features original songs by Burick, brought to fruition through the talent and creativity of Brinkley, Gibbs, and Gibbon. Collectively their music is a sea of stories about life, love, heartache, truth, friendship, despair and hope. “Many a Ship have set sail on these waters, many a ship yet to be”.

One of our absolute favorites is back in Asheville 8/21!
Caleb Synan is one of the hottest young comics in the country. (Funny AND good looking!) His unique background as a preacher’s kid from a small southern town gives him the ability to relate to any and every crowd — even though he’s a big old millennial who lives in LA. Want proof? He’s written and starred in two different Comedy Central web series: “Deadliest Chef” and “Wise Words” (That’s the internet!) And he’s performed on CONAN (twice!), Last Comic Standing (once!), and Fuse’s “Uproarious” (TV! That’s right!)
He’s also entertained our troops in South Korea and Japan. What a guy! It’s no wonder he won the title of “Wittiest” in Franklin County High School’s 2009 Yearbook. He even wrote this bio himself. And he’ll have a margarita with you if you play your cards right.
