Catawba Brewing Company

Join us, Mount Inspiration Apparel and The Appalachian Trail Conservancy on February 7th for our Bear Can Blueberry Chocolate Wheat Ale Release! $1 from each pint of this delicious wheat ale will be donated to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy who leads large efforts to protect, maintain and celebrate the Appalachian National Scenic Trail (A.T.)!

We are also raffling off a few Catawba beer items, along with some amazing swag from Mount Inspiration Apparel and Appalachian Trail Conservancy starting at 6:00!! Raffle tickets will be $2 each and all of the funds will be donated to ATC!

Why did we call this beer Bear Can Blueberry Chocolate Wheat Ale you ask? Well… Bear Can is a storage device used by many backcountry campers and Appalachian Trail hikers to keep their food safe from bears. It’s the best way to practice Leave No Trace along commonly frequented recreation resources like the Appalachian Trail because hanging food is unreliable due to limited availability of suitable branches and savvy bears increasingly skilled at bear-bag snatching.

Robert Turner launches Carrots Don’t Grow on Trees
Feb 7 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe

Twelve years after Michael Pollan first opened our eyes to the modern problems of the industrial food complex, organic farmer and successful businessman Robert Turner explores what has changed in our food culture and how the current ‘grow local’ and ‘farm to table’ movement is now determining where and how we live. In Carrots Don’t Grow on Trees an organic farm takes center stage in a new kind of agriculturally-based community where residents gain closer connections healthy food and the farmers who grow it. Turner wasn’t trying to build Utopia; the community he envisions is the next logical step for the ‘eat your view’ movement that has already changed restaurant menus around the world. Turner takes a no-nonsense business approach to saving small farms and protecting our local farming capacity while preserving the important knowledge of growing food for future generations.

Robert Turner is a writer for several columns in regional food and lifestyle magazines, an entrepreneur, and the founder of multiple businesses in such diverse industries as manufacturing, licensing, publishing and real estate development. Now owner of an organic farm and the Executive Director of the Creekside Farm Education Center, Turner is a dedicated advocate for small, local farmers and sustainable food production. Mr. Turner is a graduate from Illinois State University with a bachelor’s degree in English Literature. He currently lives with his wife Kara on a working farm in the mountains of Western North Carolina. They have two sons in college.

We ask that you purchase the books you want to be signed at our events from Malaprop’s. When you do this you are not only supporting the work it takes to run an events program, you are also telling the publishers that they should keep sending authors here. Can’t make it to the store for the event? Call us or order the book on our website in advance, and we’ll get it signed for you. Make sure you write your preferences in the comments if you purchase online.
