Join us in honoring Susan’s transition into grandmotherhood! While we will be celebrating Susan and all she has contributed to this garden over the years, this will be a space to celebrate you too. Here are some words from her and we hope to see you there!
“For ten years now, I’ve been doing work I passionately love and believe in at The Lord’s Acre—thanks to you. This spring I’ll be taking a sabbatical to do something I love even more, helping care for our first grandchild.
Over time, people have come to associate me with The Lord’s Acre. I don’t. I associate it with all of you.
I realized then that I have been a garden conductor. I had a vision for what needed to be done to create something meaningful and found people who were far more talented than I to work together to make it possible. For ten years I have watched this vision come to life, thanks to the thousands of folks who have donated, volunteered, or worked on the board—all doing things I’m not the least bit capable of.
It’s been an honor and a gift to share this vision and watch you—watch everyone together—make it a reality.”
**Please feel free to bring a side or desert to share as we will be providing a “main” dish.**

Local Asheville poet Brandon Amico will read from his debut collection of poems, Disappearing, Inc. (published by Gold Wake Press, March 2019). The reading will be followed by a Q&A with the audience and then a book signing.
Disappearing, Inc. interrogates our fragmented and relentless moment in American history, one that constantly breaks down the self in order to analyze and assign value to our constituent parts—what poet Michael Bazzett (author of The Interrogation and You Must Remember This from Milkweed Editions) calls “the media-technogasm of 21st century capitalism” in his praise for Amico’s poems, which “crackle with energy as they joke and juke their way to exploring what it means to live a fully human life” today.
Tackling everything from dying bees and a crumbling climate to technology, self-worth, and self-preservation, Disappearing, Inc. weaves tenderness, humor, wistfulness, and anger without sacrificing poetry’s crucial sense of curiosity. Karen Skolfield, author of the Barnard Women Poets Prize-winning Battle Dress (W. W. Norton, 2019), says: “Just like the targets of every clever marketing pitch, readers of Brandon Amico’s debut book can’t help but buy into his wit, his keen eye for the insidious in the everyday, his understanding of loneliness in a throng, his attention to language.”

Join Sanctuary Brewing Company and Ben Phan, Guitarist and Songwriter on February 7th, 2018 for an evening of incredible music by an even more incredible person!
A year of jazz conservatory at Virginia Commonwealth University left Ben Phan rebellious: uninspired by the environment and fed-up with the structure, he knew he didn’t want to be an academic musician.
So Phan began his professional career as a founding member of the Richmond Afrobeat Movement, a blend of jazz, funk and African dance music which earned significant attention in the South, including a TV appearance and other media features.
A stint as Musical Director for Free Run Wine Merchants gave Phan a chance to develop his professional skills, setting up musical events for the company, which included solo jazz gigs as well as band arrangements.
Phan then joined a bluegrass and folk band, the Rusty Strings, and discovered the joy in sitting on a porch and singing together with others, simply for the love of music.
In 2014, Phan decided to hike the Pacific Crest Trail and his life changed forever. Along with everything else he needed, he carried a mini-guitar on his back and became known by the name “Shredder” because of how he “shredded the guitar” when he played. Five months of travel on foot, 2,668 miles from the Mexican border all the way into Canada, playing for himself and the people he met, transformed his relationship with music. He began writing songs, drawn from his experiences on the trail as well as his past struggles with depression, addiction, loss and love. The music offered hope and solace, to him and to his audiences.
The time on the Pacific Crest Trail renewed Phan’s passion for music. With a prolific body of original work, he returned to Asheville to record his first solo EP, “Hold On, Let Go.” He assembled a band, made up of some of the best musicians in Asheville: besides liking his music, they appreciate the dedication and professionalism Phan brings to his work. The band released it’s debut album, “Dreams in Modern Folk”, to a sold out crowd at the Altamont Theatre, one of Asheville’s finest listening rooms. The band continued to perform successful shows over the following year, refining their high energy sound which combines fiery improvisation with rich composition. This led to a successful kickstarter campaign to fund their next album, “Fear is the Teacher”, which the band is currently recording with Grammy winning producer Matt Williams. Phan continues to perform with the band, as a solo artist, and in collaborations with other musicians; he has also built a successful guitar teaching practice, which he finds a great source of inspiration.
Phan is a prolific poet, songwriter, and guitarist, with the soul of an improviser. He crafts his songs to give room for improvisation, presence, and self-expression in the moment. He believes that the best live music is when everyone playing is co-creating – which means that every one of his concerts offers audiences a different sound and a unique experience.

It’s not bike night. It’s not movie night. It’s Moto Movie Night.
Last event was fantastic, we packed the house, and everyone had a blast. We’ll do it bigger, better (and a little louder) this time.
Our latest location is in the heart of West Asheville at a new space called the Alleycat Social Club. It has plenty of standing and sitting space as well as an outdoor patio. There will be some roped off parking for motorcycles and additional off street parking for those non-riders coming out.
PSA: This month’s movie may contain some content not suitable for young children. Please be advised.
We look forward to seeing everyone out again.
Cheers!

BAMBOOZLED: Prepare a five-minute story about your greatest con, your Tom Sawyer moment, or the day gullibility got the best of you. That time when you managed to pull the wool over someone’s eyes … or that moment you became the mark. Hoodwinker or the hornswoggled. Scammer or the snookered. Did you get them all to paint the fence or unwittingly show up with your brushes?

It is brilliant and quietly addictive” – The London Guardian
“New York’s hottest and hippest literary ticket” – The Wall Street Journal
The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organization dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling. It is a celebration of both the raconteur, who breathes fire into true tales of ordinary life, and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. At the center of each performance is, of course, the story – and The Moth’s directors work with each storyteller to find, shape and present it.
Since its launch in 1997, The Moth has presented thousands of stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide.
Moth shows are renowned for the great range of human experience they showcase. Each show starts with a theme, and the storytellers explore it, often in unexpected ways. Since each story is true and every voice authentic, the shows dance between documentary and theater, creating a unique, intimate, and often enlightening experience for the audience.
Moth stories dissolve socio-economic barriers, expose vulnerabilities, and quietly suggest ways to overcome challenges and see with new eyes.
