Abbey Road LIVE! is well known in the Southeast for their energetic concerts at clubs, theaters and festivals. This time, the focus will be on the kids. Expect fun classics such as “Octopus’ Garden”, “Yellow Submarine”, and “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds”. Does your child have a favorite Beatles tune? Abbey Road LIVE! loves to take requests, and has often been known to invite kids on stage to sing along.

Each year, deep in the heart of winter, the Mardi Gras season lights a spark as it begins on January 5th (12 nights after Christmas) with the Twelfth Night Celebration.

On this enchanted night, the King and Queen of Asheville’s new Mardi Gras season will be crowned. All Asheville Mardi Gras supporting members are welcome to take a slice of King Cake.

Whoever finds the Mardi Gras baby in his or her slice will pick a royal consort, and the two will lead the Asheville Mardi Gras Parade as newly crowned royalty!

Memberships will be available at the door. As always, costumery and buffoonery are welcome, but not required.

Laura Blackley is a singer, songwriter and purveyor of high lonesome Appalachian blues and soul. She was an on-air host and producer for seven years at WNCW 88.7 FM in Spindale, NC, spotlighting regional music, women in roots music, and bluegrass and old-time. She currently works (in addition to her gig schedule) as a Teaching Artist with Musicworks!, a program that utilizes music and musicianship to teach life skills to young children. A born storyteller, she has played in many bands, traveled many back roads and interstates and enjoys digging up old tunes and hearing the stories behind them. She believes that music has a healing power and is a communal act, and is very much looking forward to the next gig.

The Wildflowers are Ian Harrod on bass and vocals, Josh Gibbs on lap steel, Richard Foulk on drums. And sometimes awesome guests like Lyndsay Pruett on fiddle and Dorsey Parker on ‘lectric guitar.

DIGGING DOWN INTO THE ROOTS OF THE REGION, THEY BLEND A CLASSIC APPROACH TO A NEW ORIGINAL SOUND, DRENCHED IN POWERFUL LYRICS, ACOUSTIC MELODIES AND SOULFUL HARMONIES.

THE STORY STARTS OUT LIKE IT SHOULD HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN NEW YORK TWO GENERATIONS AGO OR PERHAPS ON A MOVIE SET IN HOLLYWOOD TODAY: THE GIRL WAS WORKING IN A WINDOWLESS BAR HIDDEN AWAY IN THE BACK OF ANOTHER BUSINESS WHEN THE STRANGER WALKED IN WITH A GUITAR, BEGAN PLAYING AND SINGING, AND SUDDENLY SHE WAS AWARE OF NOTHING BUT HIS VOICE. CAPTIVATED, SHE INTRODUCED HERSELF AND THE TWO SOON VENTURED OUT INTO THE WORLD TO MAKE MUSICAL HISTORY.

CHANGE A FEW DETAILS AND THE REALITY OF LETTERS TO ABIGAIL IS NOT FAR REMOVED FROM THIS TALE.

SEVEN YEARS AGO, KELLI REDMOND WAS WORKING AT THE BACK ROOM, A SMALL MUSIC VENUE TUCKED AWAY IN THE BACK OF THE FLAT ROCK WINE SHOPPE. IT WAS OPEN MIC NIGHT AND JAMES HARRELL WAS THERE TO PARTAKE IN THE EVENING’S FESTIVITIES, UNBEKNOWNST TO THE FACT THAT THIS EVENING WAS ABOUT TO CHANGE EVERYTHING ABOUT HIS MUSICAL PATH. “I THOUGHT HE SOUNDED FANTASTIC” REDMOND SAYS, RECALLING HER FIRST IMPRESSION OF HARRELL. “I WAS ALREADY DOING THIS MUSIC THING IN MY LIVING ROOM WHERE A BUNCH OF US WOULD PLAY TOGETHER SO I INVITED HIM TO JOIN US.”

THE REST, AS THE CLICHÉ GOES, IS HISTORY. AS SOON AS THEY FIRST PLAYED TOGETHER THEY NOTICED HOW WELL THEIR VOICES COMPLEMENTED EACH OTHER “LIKE IT WAS MEANT TO BE” SHE SAYS WITH A TONE THAT STILL SOUNDS AS EXCITED AS SHE MUST HAVE BEEN WHEN THIS ALL FIRST HAPPENED.

FROM THIS CHANCE ENCOUNTER LETTERS TO ABIGAIL WAS BORN. THE DUO IS A MODERN DAY STRING BAND WITH A DISTINCTLY OLD TIME FEEL AND IT IS EASY TO SEE WHAT DREW THE TWO MUSICIANS TOGETHER. WHEN REDMOND AND HARRELL SING TOGETHER IN HARMONY IT REALLY DOES FEEL LIKE THE TWO WERE DESIGNED WITH THE EXPRESS PURPOSE OF BEING BAND MATES. WHETHER IT IS A HEARTFELT LOVE SONG LIKE “ANGEL IN ORDINARY SHOES” OR AN UPBEAT AND CATCHY BREAK-UP SONG LIKE “LEAVE THE LEAVIN’” THE DUO SOUNDS LIKE MASTERS OF THEIR GENRE, BOTH MUSICALLY AND LYRICALLY.

IN REALITY, LETTERS TO ABIGAIL IS STILL IN THE EARLY STAGES OF WHAT PROMISES TO BE A LONG AND SUCCESSFUL MUSICAL JOURNEY. THEY RECORDED THEIR FIRST ALBUM “SAY ANYTHING” IN 2013 WHICH MADE WNCW’S LIST OF TOP 100 RELEASES OF THE YEAR. REDMOND ADMITS, THOUGH, THAT THE ALBUM WAS HEAVILY INFLUENCED BY WHAT EACH OF THEM HAD BEEN DOING BEFORE THEY TEAMED UP. IT WAS A COMING TOGETHER OF “WHAT HE WROTE AND WHAT I WROTE” THAT THEY HAD POLISHED AND PRESENTED AS A DUO, AS OPPOSED TO A COMPLETELY JOINT EFFORT BY THE BAND.

ALL OF THAT CHANGED WHEN THEY RECORDED THEIR SOON-TO-BE RELEASED SELF-TITLED FOLLOW UP ALBUM. REDMOND PROMISES A MORE ECLECTIC ALBUM THAT REPRESENTS THE DUO’S WORK WRITING THEIR MUSIC AS A TEAM. “IT’S A LITTLE BIT OF A MOSH PIT” IN TERMS OF STYLE SHE PROMISES WITH A LAUGH. AS AN EXAMPLE SHE SPECIFICALLY MENTIONS THE INCLUSION OF A MURDER BALLAD, A BLUES TUNE, HEARTFELT LOVE SONGS, UPLIFTING TRACKS, AND EVEN A “SLOW, RAINY DAY KIND OF TUNE” COMING IN THE FORM OF “TAKE ME AWAY,” ORIGINALLY MADE POPULAR BY HAYES CARLL. THE RESULT IS AN ALBUM TRULY REPRESENTATIVE OF LETTERS TO ABIGAIL’S TALENT AND, SPECIFICALLY, THEIR LIVE PERFORMANCES, OF WHICH THEY PERFORM WELL OVER 100 TIMES A YEAR.

Somewhat Petty: A Tom Petty Tribute Band at The Grey Eagle

Somewhat Petty is a new Asheville-based tribute band playing the best of rock icon Tom Petty, and, of course, the Heartbreakers, with some Traveling Wilburys thrown in for good measure. Somewhat Petty is comprised of 6 local musicians, all with one common goal: playing great rock music everyone loves – 40 years of Tom Petty & company. Mixing her roots in the traditional with her own pop-tinged songwriting she is creating a musical mark all her own.

Ashley Heath is an Americana Musician hailing from Asheville, NC who fronts band Ashley Heath and Her Heathens. Voted #1 Acoustic / Folk Artist and #2 Songwriter of WNC by Mountain Xpress readers as well as winning the Band Competition at Merlefest’ 2018, Heath has set on a mission to connect with as many people as possibly through song. Heath’s vocals have been described as strong and velvety with bluesy tones, and a little twang of country add the unique and authentic twist to her sound. Heath released her first album “A Different Stream” in May 2016 and released Sophomore album “Where Hope Never Dies”with band AH&HH in April 2018. Heath has been touring regionally and has even step foot out on her first National Tour in November 2018 playing venues from Asheville, NC to Los Angeles, CA.
