Rempis/Lopez/Packard at The Mothlight
Apr 17 @ 9:00 pm – Apr 18 @ 12:00 am
The Mothlight

Rempis/Lopez/Packard at The Mothlight
Wednesday April 17th
Doors 8pm
Tickets: $8adv, https://www.ticketfly.com/purchase/event/1830190

This working trio finds journeyman Chicago saxophonist Dave Rempis alongside two of the brightest talents in a younger generation of improvising musicians. Bassist Brandon Lopez is a musician whose virtuosity knows no bounds, currently one of the most in-demand bassists on the New York jazz and improvised music scene. Percussionist Ryan Packard counters that depth with his own breadth of interests, working in contemporary classical ensembles, indie rock bands, and jazz groups alike around Chicago, not to mention his doubling abilities on electronics. These two together provide a formidable rhythm section that can veer from hard-driving grooves to luscious soundscapes with total ease.

Active since the summer of 2017, the trio made its first studio recording in March of 2018, released in early 2019 on Rempis’ Aerophonic Records imprint. This debut outing is titled The Early Bird Gets, and is perhaps the “jazziest” project any of them are involved with; a result that even the band members found surprising. But after honing their sound through live gigs in 2017 and early 2018, it became apparent that their free-improvised conversation kept returning to a similar destination: a three-way exploration of rhythm and tempo that left them working solidly within the jazz tradition. Not the one fixed into predictable stylistic corners, but the one defined by a spirit of boundless curiosity and exploration. A tradition they stretched back and forth like so much taffy.

The way these three unite into a groove is truly remarkable. Not as something to be closely adhered to, but as something to turn upside down, inside out, and ass backwards, as they expose every last facet of it. At times this means slowing it down, speeding it up, or splitting those two approaches up amongst the band simultaneously. At other times it means jumping to another dimension on the turn of a dime. And while that methodology may feel counterintuitive to the end result, it’s not. This band has a classic approach that has an inherent life and energy to it that dates back to the beginnings of jazz as an art form. It truly swings.

Ghost Light

Ghost Light is a true musical collaboration; five personalities, five perspectives, and five unique approaches towards one common sound.

Bucking conventional tradition, rather than initially focusing on live shows, the band played together for the first time in a recording studio in Philadelphia. This decision gave the band’s members – Holly Bowling, Tom Hamilton, Steve Lyons, Raina Mullen and Scotty Zwang – the ability to come to the project with fresh ears and no pre-conceived notions. They developed the songs as they developed their musical communication which led to trust, creativity and an adventurous take on the process. Scotty Zwang explained it thusly, “It’s a unique and interesting approach we get to take…” “we are being patient with each other and figuring out what the song needs”

While the recording project has been the beginning point for Ghost Light, the live experience is what will define this band. “In the parts of the sessions where we have had a little more room to just let things go, there have been these little glimmers of what the improvisation will feel like live. That’s a whole other thing and it’s very exciting,” notes Holly Bowling. Tom Hamilton adds, “with this new band, we felt super comfortable going in any direction, knowing that with our new bandmates, the songs will get to where they needs to go. And in the live setting, that confidence is just as strong.”

Ben Frankin’s 13 Virtues Circle
Apr 18 @ 10:30 am – 12:00 pm
Jubilee Community Church

Founding father and master inventor Benjamin Franklin was also a pioneer of self-improvement. In 1727 Franklin formed the Junto, a weekly mutual-improvement club made up of a group of his peers and fellow Philadelphia tradesmen to discuss 13 core virtues and explore how to better incorporate them in their lives – and use them as a foundation for enriching the world. The club became the launching pad for all sorts of civic initiatives: the public library, the post office and the volunteer fire department, which have had a lasting impact on society.

Join us while we gather to discuss the 13 virtues in the context of the present day. We’ll meet weekly for 13 weeks and commit to making better and more conscious choices about our own behavior and work with others to spread those virtues through acts of kindness and good deeds. There is no cost and it is open to all!

Bluff Mountain: The Rallying Cry
Apr 18 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
D. Hiden Ramsey Library at UNC Asheville

“Bluff Mountain: The Rallying Cry” – a film by Hannah Furgiuele

Since 2014 I have been researching and documenting how concerned citizens have worked to protect Bluff Mountain, one of Madison County’s highest peaks from large scale logging. My presentation will include some excerpts from the documentary I am producing titled: Bluff Mountain: The Rallying Cry.

More about the film:
In 1995, the small Appalachian town of Hot Springs fought back against the U.S. Forest Service to protect Bluff Mountain from large-scale logging by founding a music festival. The highest peak in Madison County, Bluff is home to rare flora and fauna, pristine headwaters and beautiful vistas. Residents of Bluff Mountain Betty and Bill Smith discovered the clear-cut markers while out on a walk one Sunday afternoon. From there the Bluff Mountain Coalition formed and a community of activists emerged. Twenty years later, the Bluff Mountain Music Festival is still a vibrant part of Hot Springs and acts as a reminder to the strength of the community. With the reemergence of this logging threat in 2015, as the U.S. Forest Service releases initial drafts for their next 20-year forest management plan, new strategies for resistance and activism have taken root. Excerpts from the film will include interviews with key activists involved in both fights.

Library Brown Bag Talks are free and open to UNC Asheville students, faculty, and staff as well as the Asheville community. Feel free to bring your lunch. Light refreshments are always served.

Good Friday (now Thursday) X marks the spot: Stolen Land/Lives
Apr 18 @ 5:45 pm – 7:30 pm
BeLoved Asheville

Each Good Friday, BeLoved Asheville leads a procession to explore who is being crushed & crucified today in our city & world. A People’s Stations of the cross uses Jesus’ walk to the cross as a modern spiritual exploration of the systems of death that pervade our world including the state-sanctioned violence Jesus experienced on the cross.

This year, we will explore the image of cross as a metaphor for the proverbial “X marks the spot!” to look at how black and brown people in Asheville and the nation have had their lands and lives stolen and how we can be faithful to the work of the people rising through reparations and welcome.

The procession is an annual event and traditionally includes singing, and spoken word reflections at different sites around the City. These sacred sites become the bedrock for action when we reveal and understand who is experiencing generational systems meant for death and destruction.

We typically walk/roll several miles in the course of the two hour gathering. This is meant to be a time of reflection and to call ourselves to the work of ending all systems that create mass suffering built on racism writ large in our community institutions
