Laura E. Wolfson presents For Single Mothers Working As Train Conductors in conversation with Elizabeth Kostova
Laura Esther Wolfson’s literary debut draws on years of immersion in the Russian and French languages; struggles to gain a basic understanding of Judaism, its history, and her place in it; and her search for a form to hold the stories that emerge from what she has lived, observed, overheard, and misremembered. In “Proust at Rush Hour,” when her lungs begin to collapse and fail, forcing her to give up an exciting and precarious existence as a globetrotting simultaneous interpreter, she seeks consolation by reading Proust in the original while commuting by subway to a desk job that requires no more than a minimal knowledge of French. In “For Single Mothers Working as Train Conductors” she gives away her diaphragm and tubes of spermicidal jelly to a woman in the Soviet Union who, with two unwanted pregnancies behind her, needs them more than she does. “The Husband Method” has her translating a book on Russian obscenities and gulag slang during the dissolution of her marriage to the Russian-speaker who taught her much of what she knows about that language. In prose spangled with pathos and dusted with humor, Wolfson transports us to Paris, the Republic of Georgia, upstate New York, the Upper West Side, and the corridors of the United Nations, telling stories that skewer, transform, and inspire.
Wolfson will be joined by Elizabeth Kostova, author of The Historian, The Swan Thieves, and The Shadow Land.

We’ve been talking to the folks from Bardic Alchemy, a Celtic Rock band from Asheville and they’ve agreed to play at Triskelion as many Tuesdays as they can come down to the Brewery.
Bardic Alchemy is a brand new element in the Celtic Rock world. This trio, based in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina is comprised of multi-instrumentalist Connell Sanderson, guitarist Nick Marcone and percussionist and vocalist Tyler Watts.
Bardic Alchemy is best described as a psychedelic trip into a musical world that is heavily inspired by the Celtic musical traditions…run through various effects pedals. Everything from soothing, mellifluously reverberating whistle melodies supported by groovy guitar lines and thumping djembe beats to high energy dance tunes on the Scottish and Irish pipes to three part vocal harmonies and even improvised pieces, Bardic Alchemy is a surprisingly dynamic and unpredictable musical journey.
So… Tuesdays… will now be…
Celtic Rock Tuesday!

All chapter meetings are held at 7 pm on the second Tuesday of each month, at the REI store at Biltmore Park Town Square. Doors open at 6:30.

MUSIC
The French Broads are a supergroup of lady musicians from various Asheville, NC swing bands. They take their name from Asheville’s iconic river. They play a mixture of original and classic hot club swing standards. Cynthia McDermott (Pimps of Pomp) plays mandolin and sings, Annie Erbsen (Low Down Sires, Russ Wison’s Swing Orchestra) plays guitar, Whitney Moore (Queen Bee and the Honeylovers, Gravyhouse Storytellers) plays snare and sings, Cary Fridley (Down South, House Hoppers) plays bass and sings, and Maddy Mullany plays violin

CLASSES
7pm: Continuing Class: Taster Class: Tap w/ Deb
This month, we’re doing a bunch of different classes to give you a taste of some different styles of dancing. This week will be a special tap class taught by Deb. No tap shoes required. Looking forward: Week three, we’re going to learn the classic Shim Sham routine. Whether you’re learning for the first time, or just need a refresher, come have fun and dance.
FB Event Page: https://www.facebook.com/events/874560902747791/
“Continuing” classes are for those dancers who have cemented the basics of the dance being featured that specific month. This includes knowing (and being able to execute cleanly and consistently) basic footwork and lead/follow skills for that dance. Some continuing classes may require no advance knowledge of a dance. This will be noted in the the class description.
*******************
8 pm: Core Class: Taster Class: Balboa w/ Deb & Jean
Ready to try a new type of swing, but not sure where to start? This month will give you a chance to try a little bit of Lindy Hop, Balboa, and Charleston with several different instructors. No experience? No problem. We’re starting from the bottom with each class and giving you the basic partnered steps to get you on the social floor and dancing. This week’s focus is BALBOA taught by the fabulous Deb and Jean!
FB Event Page: https://www.facebook.com/events/874560902747791/
“Core” lessons stress the fundamentals of swing dancing for beginning dancers. Lessons rotate monthly to focus on a different kind of swing dance (6 Count Lindy, 8 Count Lindy, Charleston, Balboa, etc.). Because good fundamentals are hard to develop in one month, we recommend repeating Core lessons (on the same topic) to help develop the solid foundation you’ll need in continuing classes. Core lessons are also great for intermediate and advanced dancers who want to “get back to basics” or learn a different dancing role (lead vs. follow).

GIFT CERTIFICATES
Do you want to buy a gift certificate for our classes as a gift, or to pre-pay for a block of classes for yourself? You can purchase gift certificates at the door at our weekly dance! They are $40 for a block of 4, and a great way to dive into the fun world of dance.

Andrew Marlin
You may be familiar with Andrew from his involvement with Chapel Hill, NC duo Mandolin Orange. As the songwriter for the band, Andrew has become known as a gifted lyricist, producing powerful yet subtle, thoughtfully crafted songs. With Mandolin Orange, Andrew has toured the world, gracing famous stages including the Ryman Auditorium, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and Newport Folk Festival, to name just a few.
Buried In a Cape, Andrew’s first solo project, was released September 14, 2018. The album is a collection of his instrumental work. He wrote the songs on and off the road, and the recording session was scheduled on a whim at the Butcher Shoppe in Nashville, TN with Eli West (guitar, banjo), Christian Sedelmyer (fiddle), and Clint Mullican (bass). The compositions highlight Andrew’s skills as an instrumentalist, while showcasing that his writing skills are not confined to poignant lyricism.
With Buried In a Cape, Andrew follows in the footsteps of his previous accolades. The Mandolin Cafe said “Marlin joins his heroes as a mandolinist of note, and a talent for the ages,” while Red Line Roots praised the album saying “Buried In a Cape is (in my opinion) the best record to be released in 2018. For those of you who are already fans of instrumental music, this will be your go to for years to come. For those who are not fans of instrumental music, listen to this album and then I’ll say ‘welcome to the club’.”
For these shows, Andrew will be joined by his Buried In A Cape recording band (Christian Sedelmyer, Eli West, and Clint Mullican). This cast of players have history with a list of roots music luminaries including Jerry Douglas, Bill Frisell, and Tim O’ Brien alongside their acclaimed solo projects.
