Around Here: A Dark Road is a Hard Road to Travel
Jan 28 @ 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm
Mars Hill University

G.B. Grayson and Henry Whitter were one of the most influential musical duos in the history of traditional music, popularizing songs like “Little Maggie,” “Handsome Molly,” “Train 45,” and many others. Although their lives were both cut tragically short, their enduring legacy continues to resonate today. Their lives and music provide a fascinating insight into life in the Appalachian Mountains at the turn of the 20th century.

Josh Beckworth has lived his entire life in Ashe County, North Carolina, and he has devoted the majority of his adult life to the study of local music. He has written extensively on traditional bluegrass musicians in Ashe County and has recently published a book length study of Grayson and Whitter entitled Always Been A Rambler: G.B. Grayson and Henry Whitter, Country Music Pioneers of Southern Appalachia (McFarland, 2018).

Around Here talks are free of charge and all are welcome. Complimentary coffee and cookies will be provided. The event will be held in the Ramsey Center, which is located inside Renfro Library on the campus of Mars Hill University.

The Ramsey Center is a proud site on the Blue Ridge Music Trails of North Carolina.

For events that happen before 6pm on a weekday, please park in the lot on Bailey Street just next to the Greenway – across the street from Chambers Gym. After 6pm, visitors may park in any available green or white parking space, even if it is designated “faculty” or “students.”

Rescheduled: Tommy Tomlinson The Elephant in the Room
Jan 28 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe

This event has been rescheduled to Monday, January 28th at 6pm.

In the tradition of Roxane Gay’s Hunger, a searing, honest, and candid exploration of what it’s like to live as a fat man, from acclaimed journalist Tommy Tomlinson, who decided he had to change his life as he neared the age of fifty weighing in at 460 pounds.
When he was almost fifty years old, Tommy Tomlinson weighed an astonishing–and dangerous–460 pounds, at risk for heart disease, diabetes, and stroke, unable to climb a flight of stairs without having to catch his breath, or travel on an airplane without buying two seats. Raised in a family that loved food, he had been aware of the problem for years, seeing doctors and trying diets from the time he was a preteen. But nothing worked, and every time he tried to make a change, it didn’t go the way he planned–in fact, he wasn’t sure that he really wanted to change. He was only one of millions of Americans struggling with weight, body image, and a relationship with food that puts them at major risk. Intimate and insightful, The Elephant in the Room is Tomlinson’s chronicle of meeting those people, taking the first steps towards health, and trying to understand how, as a nation, we got to this point. From buying a FitBit and setting an exercise goal to contemplating the Heart Attack Grill, America’s “capital of food porn,” and modifying his own diet, Tomlinson brings us along on an unforgettable journey of self-discovery that is a candid and sometimes brutal look at the everyday experience of being constantly aware of your size. Over the course of the book, he confronts these issues head on and chronicles the practical steps he has to take–big and small–to lose weight by the end.

We ask that you purchase the books you want to be signed at our events from Malaprop’s. When you do this you are not only supporting the work it takes to run an events program, you are also telling the publishers that they should keep sending authors here. Can’t make it to the store for the event? Call us or order the book on our website in advance, and we’ll get it signed for you. Make sure you write your preferences in the comments if you purchase online.

Jan 28 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
DanceLab Asheville

Body Offerings is a four week workshop series exploring expressive and communicative qualities of movement and voice. We will integrate sound and voice with movement in a variety of ways in order to better understand the relationship between the sounds we make, the words we say, and the ways we move through the world. The goal of this workshop is to enhance and develop a deeper sense of embodiment and comfort in expression and experimentation. We will also ask what it means to perform for someone and how we can best witness another person’s expression. We will consider performance as a ritual gift of solidarity between bodies. We may be asked to move outside of our comfort zone during some exercises however we hope to create an atmosphere of full acceptance, spontaneity, and play.
