Carolinabound – live at the brewery
Oct 11 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Southern Appalachian Brewery

“Sometimes an artist’s name is right on the money. Having been a frequent traveler through the Carolinas, there is an immediate image conjured up when this moody, haunting version of country folk starts filling up the room. You can see and feel the influence of the Blue Ridge Mountains on Chris Smith, lead singer-songwriter and core creative force of Carolinabound. The simplicity of the songwriting is refreshing, and they’re incredibly easy to listen to, especially on a lazy weekend afternoon. Smith’s vocals are vulnerable, sweet and melancholic in their delivery of lyrics steeped in country and folk traditional topics of love, loss and life experiences. There is nothing groundbreaking in that, just the comfort of knowing this troubadouresque type of performer continues to work in the background while trends fade in and out.”
-Heidi Drockelman(indie-music.com)

“Imagine if Gram Parsons and Townes Van Zandt got together with Will Oldham on a late spring evening to sing songs late into the night. There’s an honest sentiment to these songs that rings clear and creates an atmosphere of wistful nostalgia that quickly covers everything in a comforting cocoon of memory and experience.”

Kundalini Yoga: Getting to Know Your Chakras
Oct 11 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm
The Shift Studio

Getting to Know Your Chakras and Making Them Work for You

Are you interested in finding greater inner harmony, a more reflective state of mind, and a greater sense of personal power? Getting to know your chakras and making them work for you is a great step. Join Betsy Daya Narayan, a certified Kundalini Yoga Instructor, for an exciting 4-week series exploring our chakras —the energy centers in our bodies.

Using yoga, meditation, chanting, and art, we’ll learn ways to open and balance our chakras so they can become a real source of vitality for our lives physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Many books have been written about the chakras including writings by such famous people as Yogi Bhajan, C.G Jung, Joseph Campbell, and Caroline Myss. Betsy will be using these and other sources to present a broad understanding and experience of the chakras. The first week will be an introduction to the chakra system and learning about our Root Chakra through yoga, meditation, and drawing how you might visualize your chakras. Each of the following weeks will cover two of the remaining six chakras in greater depth. Time will be allotted for discussion and sharing.

If you are interested in this series, you will want to pre-register and plan to attend the series as each class builds on the previous one.

Signe Pike presents The Lost Queen
Oct 11 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe

The Mists of Avalon meets the world of Philippa Gregory in the thrilling first novel of a debut trilogy that reveals the untold story of Languoreth–a forgotten queen of sixth-century Scotland–twin sister of the man who inspired the legend of Merlin.

In a land of mountains and mist, tradition and superstition, Languoreth and her brother Lailoken are raised in the Old Way of their ancestors. But in Scotland, a new religion is rising, one that brings disruption, bloodshed, and riot. And even as her family faces the burgeoning forces of Christianity, the Anglo-Saxons, bent on colonization, are encroaching from the east. When conflict brings the hero Emrys Pendragon to her father’s door, Languoreth finds love with one of his warriors. Her deep connection to Maelgwn is forged by enchantment, but she is promised in marriage to Rhydderch, son of a Christian king. As Languoreth is catapulted into a world of violence and political intrigue, she must learn to adapt. Together with her brother–a warrior and druid known to history as Myrddin–Languoreth must assume her duty to fight for the preservation of the Old Way and the survival of her kingdom, or risk the loss of them both forever.

Based on new scholarship, this tale of bravery and conflicted love brings a lost queen back to life–rescuing her from obscurity, and reaffirming her place at the center of one of the most enduring legends of all time.

Ben Phan at Sanctuary Brewing Co.
Oct 11 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Sanctuary Brewing Company

Join Sanctuary Brewing and Ben Phan on the 2nd Thursday of October for an evening of incredible music by an even more incredible person!

A year of jazz conservatory at Virginia Commonwealth University left Ben Phan rebellious: uninspired by the environment and fed-up with the structure, he knew he didn’t want to be an academic musician.

So Phan began his professional career as a founding member of the Richmond Afrobeat Movement, a blend of jazz, funk and African dance music which earned significant attention in the South, including a TV appearance and other media features.

A stint as Musical Director for Free Run Wine Merchants gave Phan a chance to develop his professional skills, setting up musical events for the company, which included solo jazz gigs as well as band arrangements.

Phan then joined a bluegrass and folk band, the Rusty Strings, and discovered the joy in sitting on a porch and singing together with others, simply for the love of music.

In 2014, Phan decided to hike the Pacific Crest Trail and his life changed forever. Along with everything else he needed, he carried a mini-guitar on his back and became known by the name “Shredder” because of how he “shredded the guitar” when he played. Five months of travel on foot, 2,668 miles from the Mexican border all the way into Canada, playing for himself and the people he met, transformed his relationship with music. He began writing songs, drawn from his experiences on the trail as well as his past struggles with depression, addiction, loss and love. The music offered hope and solace, to him and to his audiences.

The time on the Pacific Crest Trail renewed Phan’s passion for music. With a prolific body of original work, he returned to Asheville to record his first solo EP, “Hold On, Let Go.” He assembled a band, made up of some of the best musicians in Asheville: besides liking his music, they appreciate the dedication and professionalism Phan brings to his work. The band released it’s debut album, “Dreams in Modern Folk”, to a sold out crowd at the Altamont Theatre, one of Asheville’s finest listening rooms. The band continued to perform successful shows over the following year, refining their high energy sound which combines fiery improvisation with rich composition. This led to a successful kickstarter campaign to fund their next album, “Fear is the Teacher”, which the band is currently recording with Grammy winning producer Matt Williams. Phan continues to perform with the band, as a solo artist, and in collaborations with other musicians; he has also built a successful guitar teaching practice, which he finds a great source of inspiration.

Phan is a prolific poet, songwriter, and guitarist, with the soul of an improviser. He crafts his songs to give room for improvisation, presence, and self-expression in the moment. He believes that the best live music is when everyone playing is co-creating – which means that every one of his concerts offers audiences a different sound and a unique experience.

Recorded in Nashville, TN, and produced by four-time Grammy winner Keb’ Mo’, the blues influenced album features guest appearances from Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Robben Ford and Keb’ Mo’.

A trending theme in today’s world is women overcoming obstacles and breaking through the glass ceilings to reach the top. Like It On Top celebrates those that take initiative, develop, inspire and motivate. But it also credits the men who are motivated and enlightened enough to support women in their quest to be their best versions of themselves.

“I hope that my music inspires others to motivate ladies all over the world to be successful, energetic, empowered women on a mission, and to motivate men to give them that chance,” Popovic says. “The majority of women need to work harder than men to prove themselves or need to cope with a feeling of constant pressure to never make a mistake and be perfect. I believe that women no longer only have the right to earn a living and to take care of themselves and their families. The time has come to step it up. Becoming the outstanding leaders of tomorrow. Corner-office ladies in business, politics, and the electric guitar!”

Moving west
Ana has been moving west all her life. She fell in love with American blues as a kid, starting back home in Belgrade, Serbia (ex-Yugoslavia), then moved to the Netherlands to study at the conservatory of jazz and world-music. She lived in Amsterdam for over ten years, and then in a single-minded pursuit of her art and career, she relocated to Memphis, TN to record and work with Southern musicians. Finally, two years ago, she moved her family to Los Angeles, California where she now lives.

Called “one helluva a guitar-player” by Bruce Springsteen and nominated for six Blues Music Awards, Ana has appeared on the covers of Vintage Guitar and Guitar Playermagazine. Her albums ‘Can You Stand The Heat’ and ‘Unconditional’ were USA Today Picks-Of-The-Week and featured on NPR Weekend Edition, who praised her “Fiery technique on the Stratocaster”. Nearly all of Ana’s albums reached the top of the Billboard Blues Charts. She and her six-piece band have toured tirelessly, sharing stages with B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck, Joe Bonamassa and many others.
