Big City Blues Jam with host Chicago Don
Mar 29 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Asheville Guitar Bar

Chicago Don hosts the AGB Stage for our Big City Blues Jam. Come sign up to play!

Chicago, Detroit, New York. Bright lights. Big city. Get mesmerized in the sound of Big City Blues. Clear, sharp melodies on horns and harps contrast the deep, rich back beats of the electric bass. Keyboard riffs battle electric guitars that are on fire, and classic blues drum beats drive home the groove. Lose yourself in a night of soulful music reminiscent of Freddie King, Charlie Robison, Billie Holiday, Luther Allison in the smoke filled dance halls of the past.

The Resonant Rogues LIVE at Sanctuary Brewing Company
Mar 29 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Sanctuary Brewing Company

One of our favorite and most talked about acts is back! You don’t want to miss The Resonant Rogues when they hit the stage March 29th @ 8 PM!

The Resonant Rogues is the songwriting soul child of partners Sparrow and Keith Smith. The pair met in Asheville in the Autumn of 2012, and their instant spark lit a blaze that could not be contained. Since then, they have dedicated their lives to crafting and sharing their music with the world, touring extensively across the US and Europe. The Resonant Rogues are difficult to define, but easy to enjoy. With a passion for folk music that spans continents and oceans, these songwriters bring a new relevance to old styles. The Rogues weave the threads of European, Middle Eastern, and American folk music together into a beautiful tapestry that simultaneously showcases tradition and innovation.

“American folk music has always had a populist perspective, a vision of music made by the people, for the people. Asheville, North Carolina roots band The Resonant Rogues know this well, for they’ve traveled the byways and highways of America, even crossed the water to Europe and the Mediterranean with instruments and songs in tow. Anchored by the songwriting duo Sparrow and Keith Smith, the Rogues have shared songs with train-hoppers in New Orleans, busked on the streets of Budapest, learned Turkish Romani dance in Istanbul, and marched in protest in the hills of Appalachia. Throughout, the stories they’ve heard and the people they’ve met have fueled their music, which abounds with influences like Eastern European Romani brass bands, New Orleans street jazz, old-time stringbands, Woody Guthrie anti-fascist folk, French jazz manouche, and Middle Eastern rhythms.”

———————————————————————–
Universal Sigh is set for high gear in 2019 and beyond. Their unique “metamorphic rock” compositions are rooted in quintessential groove rock that delves into an epic, cinematic, psychedelic jazz journey. Their soulful melodies reflect peaks and valleys of emotion and their harmonious improv sparks fascination in their listeners. 2019 will be a very productive year for the band boasting several single debuts and the release of the band’s second full-length album.

Based out of Athens, GA these sweet southern boys have been bringing the heat across the country since 2013. In the past 2 years, the band has shared the stage with Leftover Salmon, Papadosio, Twiddle, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, The Main Squeeze, The Werks, Aqueous, Naughty Professor, The Jauntee, Cycles and more. The quartet regularly tours between the southeast and Colorado and are always planning their annual Sigh in July Music & Arts Festival.

The band name, Universal Sigh signifies a common thread that links everyone to life – the breath. Music, like breath, provides connection, awareness, and brings you into the present moment. Aaron “Woody” Wood

Aaron Woody Wood’s story is one steeped in music and tradition. Woody is straight up Appalachian Soul music. Carved from a piece of the NC foothills Rock and then Rolled through the Mississippi Delta mud, he’s a cosmic cowboy who represents the powerful soul and energy of American music.

Beginning all the way back in Love Valley in the Piedmont foothills of North Carolina where the famous Fiddler’s Grove was held, Woody was brought up in a family full of musicians and musical talent. As long as he could remember there was music surrounding his life. Woody’s Father, AL Wood, was an important figure in Contemporary Bluegrass Music throughout the 60’s and 70’s helping define that genre of music alongside bands like ‘Seldom Scene’ and ‘Country Gentlemen’. AL Wood was well respected for his songwriting, tenor singing, and banjo playing putting out records when Bluegrass was just beginning to get popular. Playing at the Grand Ole Opry 3 times and performing at the White House were among some of the great achievements of AL Wood’s career. Woody’s Mom influenced him through encouraging him to listen to her collection of rock n roll records turning him on to artists like Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Rockabilly music.

Being the youngest of 5 kids, all of whom played instruments or sang, Woody was immersed in music and tradition from a very young and formative time in his life. His first memory of being on stage was at the young age of 6 where he played a tiny banjo his Dad had made for him. He played and sang next to his Dad and Bill Monroe that day. Between the old time bluegrass his Father and brothers played and The Piedmont Blues that he was drawn to in his teenage years, his musical styles and influences were taking shape through his guitar playing and songwriting.

At 20, Aaron Woody Wood moved to the Asheville, NC mountains and soon began busking on the downtown streets with what would end up becoming the members of the Rag n Roll swing style Ragtime music of The Blue Rags – and would be the start of Woody’s musical career as an artist. When Woody was 23 the band was signed to Sub Pop Records and began touring, eventually recording 2 CD’s and playing in 47 states across the country and abroad over the following 5 years before disbanding. Along the tours they opened up for some of the greatest like Alabama, Leon Russell, Southern Culture on the Skids, Santana, Pavement, and Ziggy Marley in places like The Oregon Country Fair, High Sierra Fest, City Stages in Birmingham, Al and SummerFest in Milwaukee. Woody was featured in Acoustic Guitar Player Magazine in April of 1998 for the work that was being released during these years.

Over the next 10 years Aaron Woody Wood had many successes as a solo artist and began various bands in Asheville like the Sufi Brothers, Custard Pie, and Hollywood Red, opening up for Mountain and Kenny Wayne Shepard. In 2006 he was featured on the CMT television show Big Break, where he beat out over 400 local Asheville musicians to open for Country Superstar Sara Evans. The show aired numerous times on the network. Woody spent those years all over the country doing club shows and festivals like Bonaroo and The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

New Orleans has always been like a second home to Woody. While spending time in The Big Easy he recorded 2 albums and performed regularly with the Blue Brass Project, a blend of traditional New Orleans jazz and bluegrass music. The Blue Brass sessions features Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Woody, members of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Rebirth Brass Band, Larry Keel, and Trombone Shorty. He performed in New Orleans at Voodoo Fest and JazzFest in 2011 and 2012 with the Mardi Gras Indian funk band, the 101 Runners.

Over the past few years Woody has been doing studio work and opening up for acts like Brad Paisley, Buddy Guy, Jamey Johnson, Kellie Pickler, David Holt and Tony Joe White. He sang on The Avett Brothers 2013 release Magpie and The Dandelion and plays at the annual XMas Jam in Asheville, NC every year.

His newest release was recorded at Fleetwood Shack Studios in Nashville Tennessee where he joined some of his bandmates from The Blue Rags. “Sunshine” features Woody on guitar and vocals, Bill Reynolds as producer and bass player and Mike Rhodes on drums. It also features Micky Raphael (Willie Nelson) on harmonica, Jimmy Wallace ( Joe Walsh) on organ – and was mastered by Rob Frabone (Keith Richards, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Bob Marley….).

Woody continues to focus on songwriting and fresh styles of guitar picking while collaborating on new creative projects.

STIG at The Ugly Dog Pub – Cashiers
Mar 29 @ 9:00 pm – Mar 30 @ 12:00 am
The Ugly Dog Public House-Cashiers

STIG is an all-instrumental progressive jazz/funk fusion band based out of Asheville, North Carolina, consisting of 5 best friends from a myriad of places both geographically and musically, including Ryan Stigmon on saxophone, Thomson Knoles on keyboards, Artie Sadtler on bass, Jack McChesney on drums, and Riley Hoover on guitar. They are individually influenced by jazz, funk, metal, bluegrass, psychedelic rock, and beyond. A day in the STIG tour van is soundracked by an absurd potluck of 5 musical brains and their live shows artfully weave their improvisational nature with tight communication and 3 years of playing and growing together, to create a high energy, exploratory and engaging experience.

STIG’s music is the culmination of a democratic and highly collaborative song-writing process – their tunes are all original and always written as a group to fuse each member’s genre-crossing influences. Since forming while at Berklee College of Music in Boston, STIG has been touring the country non-stop, and developing community around their music in the Southeast region.

From opening for the likes of Aqueous, Nicki Bluhm and Dynamo to raging the late night stage at Some Kind Of Jam festival, STIG is constantly working to bring their groovy sound to as many smiling faces as they can, catering to the vibe and energy of the crowd. Be on the lookout for new music, tour dates, and updates from the band!

Kendall Street Company

From late night jam sessions at the University of Virginia to the main stages at venues throughout the East Coast, the Company has broken out of the college bubble and into a world that loves to groove to a great live show. The band was founded in the early months of 2013 by guitarist/vocalist Louis Smith and saxophonist Andrew Drehoff. The duo had been playing together for some time in the greater Virginia Beach area, joined by a rotation of talented musicians who performed behind Louis as the Louis Smith Band. After moving to Charlottesville in late 2012 to attend the University of Virginia, the pair began putting together a group of student musicians, adding Brian Roy on bass/vocals and Ryan Wood on drums/percussion in early 2013. Since then, the band has added Andrew King on keyboards, Ben Laderberg on the electric guitar, and Jake Vanaman on saxophone.

Kendall Street Company performs regularly along the East Coast, maintaining a central presence around the state of Virginia. While the Company’s music is influenced by a variety of musicians and styles, the group has been described as “psychedelic,” “alternative,” “jammy,” “rock,” “indie,” and “ska.” Their recent performance at the 2017 Lockn Music Festival was praised by Relix magazine as having “[raised] the crowd’s energy with frontman Louis Smith and guitarist Ben Laderberg’s acoustic/electric interplay and lively, technical breakdowns”. It is not uncommon for guest performers to join the group on stage for extended jams.

Claxton Elementary Outdoor Workday
Mar 30 @ 9:00 am – 1:00 pm
Claxton Elementary School

Join us to welcome spring at Claxton Elementary! We’ll be preparing our garden beds for the growing season and taking care of a few other tasks around campus. We have garden tools, but, if you have any favorites, please feel free to bring trowels, hand pruners, shovels, rakes, root diggers, and wheelbarrows. Children are definitely welcome! Email our Claxton PTO Grounds Chair, Tricia Johnson, at [email protected] if you have any questions.
