Empire Strikes Brass (ESB) is a high energy Brass-Funk-Rock band hailing from the city of Asheville, North Carolina. Formed on the streets of their hometown, ESB is rooted in the New Orleans Brass Band tradition of second-line parades and deep moving grooves reminiscent of old school funk. Combining complex musical arrangements with thoughtful lyrical song structure, ESB can stretch out and dig deep when they are feeling it or keep things tight and concise. The fat sound of the horns paired with one dirty rhythm section makes the music downright psychedelically nasty! Founded in 2012, ESB intentionally stretches the boundaries of the stereotypical brass band paradigm, fusing sounds from various genres and weaving them together with the common thread of Brass. The diversity of the music within their sets keep audiences guessing what is next to come.
Featuring rich group and strong lead vocals including Grammy Award winner Debrissa Mckinney (Secret Agent 23 Skidoo), ESB not only takes its audiences on a ride to the dark side and back instrumentally, they also use the force of soaring melody and lush harmony to transport the listeners to another dimension. The band released its debut album, “Theme For A Celebration” in 2017 and it was tapped as one of the top 100 album releases in 2017 by WNCW 88.7 radio. Since their conception, ESB has been a consistent fixture at various festivals throughout the east coast. They’ve had the pleasure of having Warren Haynes (Allman Bros. Band and Gov’t Mule) sit in with them at New Mountain Amphitheater in Asheville, NC and the honor of headlining four years in a row celebrating the life of Dizzy Gillespie in his hometown of Cheraw, SC, for the South Carolina Jazz and Heritage Festival. ESB has co-billed with such artists as Dr. John & Lettuce. The horns have sat in on performances with Galactic, The Big Something, and many others. ESB horn players JP Furnas, Paul Juhl and Alex Bradley are also featured on the live album compilation from world-renowned artists Beats Antique entitled “Creature Carnival” released in 2015. The band is known to regularly parade off stage into the audience leading a the crowd in a raucous procession around the venue before, during or after their set.
Members of the band have also been expanding their musical resumes and repertoire. Notable side projects and performances include keyboardist Lenny Pettinelli’s recording and performing with Jazz is Phish featuring such artists as Jeff Coffin (Bela Fleck, Dave Matthews Band), Chris Bullock (Snarky Puppy), Michael Ray (Sun Ra, Kool and the Gang), the Chase Brothers and many more. The band’s founder, saxophonist Paul Juhl, performed with John Oates (Hall and Oates) at MerleFest. In addition to her work with Skidoo, Debrissa McKinney has performed with artists such as Karl Denson and Laura Reed. ESB horn players Kyle Snuffer and Alex Bradley have recorded on Marcus King’s upcoming 2018 release produced by Eric Krasno of Soulive and Lettuce.
Later this year, the band is slated to get back in the studio for a follow up sophomore effort to 2017’s Theme For A Celebration. Look for the band on the road and at festivals in a town near you!

Oracle Blue is enticingly unequivocal when it comes to genre-branding, marrying musical nostalgia with newfangled soundscapes. Under the banners of Swank-Pop and Alt-Jazz they craft for themselves a realm entirely their own with strong female vocals garnished by multi-instrumentalists in the rhythm and horn sections.
The band’s resume includes performances at Montreux, Vienne and Umbria Jazz Festivals, a DownBeat Student Music Award for Outstanding Performance in the Blues/Pop/Rock category, and the honor of being selected through competition by five-time GRAMMY Award winner Lalah Hathaway to open for two performances on her 2018 ‘Honestly’ tour. Their debut album, Gilded Kingdoms, is comprised primarily of original works, and also includes reimaginings of jazz standards “Don’t Explain” (Billie Holiday) and “On Green Dolphin Street” (Bronisalw Kaper). Gilded Kingdoms is available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, and at OracleBlueBand.com.

Tellico Album Release Show with John Doyle at The Grey Eagle
Asheville-based roots-Americana band Tellico celebrates the release of their second album Woven Waters at the The Grey Eagle on Friday January 18th at 8pm (doors 7pm). The show will feature the band’s signature “Appalachiacana” sound combined with the unmistakable groove of the album’s producer, the renowned Irish musician John Doyle. The show also features Doyle’s own innovative style that has redefined the Celtic music genre. Tickets are available for this very special evening of music at www.thegreyeagle.com for $17 in advance or $20 at the door.
About Tellico and Woven Waters:
With their honest, heartfelt songwriting and unmistakable sound, Tellico crafts Woven Waters, an album that blends Appalachian sensibilities and British Isles influence, creating an eclectic set of poignant songs that speak to our modern times. The group worked with noted Irish musician John Doyle to create and record in real-time in the studio of Grammy-nominated engineer David Arnold in Johnson City, TN. The practice brought the group to uncharted territory in their musical landscape, built upon their core sound, but with an enhanced level of awareness to texture and melody. Augmented by Doyle’s contribution on bouzouki on much of the album, the chord choices, instrumental themes and rhythmic dynamics intertwine, carefully weaving together the natural flow of each song’s intent, and inspiring the album’s title.
Released in November of 2018, the album was #2 on the Folk DJ Charts in its first month at radio, also boasting the #1 song “Courage for the Morning” and #1 artist of that month. It scored impressively at #9 album of the year on Carolina’s WNCW-FM.
The album is a follow up to the group’s debut album Relics and Roses (2015), which gathered accolades from tastemakers and earned them appearances at some of the country’s most prestigious festivals (MerleFest, Bristol Rhythm & Roots, Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival). The group formed in 2014 from members of Asheville bluegrass bands Dehlia Low and Town Mountain.
At Tellico’s core is the voice of Anya Hinkle, evoking tones of Gillian Welch, Natalie Merchant, and Hazel Dickens. With arresting honesty, her singing and songwriting comes from the heart. Her foil can be found in fellow songwriter and vocalist Greg “Stig” Stiglets. Inspired by the events of daily life, his attention to melody and groove help to further showcase the instrumental prowess of the band.
Both Aaron Ballance (dobro, lap and pedal steel) and Jed Willis (mandolin, clawhammer banjo, electric guitar) hail from North Carolina, a state that itself provides its own conservatory for musical study. Both musicians are veteran players, having studied from first-generation roots music pioneers and serious practitioners of the genre in the classrooms of countless jam sessions, gigs, and bands through the years.
The four musicians deepen their awareness each year of the synergy among them while eyeing terrain that is yet uncovered. http://www.tellicoband.com.
Official video for “Courage for the Morning,” the first track from Woven Waters, and audio links for tracks off the new album can be found here: www.tellicoband.com.
Tellico impresses, as they mine both tradition and contemporary.

There isn’t a misstep on the Woven Waters…Approach with confidence.
–Americana Music Show
“If you want to hear how modern Americana mountain music should sound, here it is.” -Martin Anderson WNCW-FM Spindale, NC
“’Woven Waters’ is a stunning follow-up from one of the most dynamic and interesting bands on the Americana scene. With a clear mastery of the many influences that make the music of Appalachia compelling, and a modern sense of groove that makes the songs impossible to forget – Tellico has firmly inserted themselves into fine company as one of North Carolina’s best bands.”
–Jacob Sharp, Mipso
About John Doyle
Producer John Doyle, best known for innovative guitar work and arrangements in Solas, the Irish-American supergroup, has performed and recorded with some of the most well-known musicians in Celtic music today. Nominated for a Grammy for his album “Double Play” with fiddler Liz Carroll, Doyle has had his hand in an astonishing number of notable recordings and collaborations in the Celtic genre.
Doyle has also worked with some of the most important voices in American folk music including Tim O’Brien, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Joan Baez. He was a core member of the popular “Transatlantic Sessions” recordings with Jerry Douglas, Sara Watkins, Kathy Mattea, and many others. There are few artists more respected, both within Irish music and the broader genre of acoustic music, or more in demand in the studio, as a songwriter, and as a performer. www.johndoylemusic.com.

The band is built on the musical brotherhood that guitarist/vocalist Silas Durocher and bassist Jesse Gentry have formed playing music together since middle school. Durocher, who is a trained composer and has been commissioned to write for symphonies and chamber groups, possesses guitar chops that can soothe or rage and a charismatic swagger as a frontman and a singer. “Durocher has an impressive range and rich clarity to his vocals—think a more soulful Dan Auerbach” (Connect Savannah). Gentry’s virtuosic bass playing “catapults from elastic to nasty” (The Mountain Xpress). With the addition of Jian-Claude Mears, a drummer with “precision, passion, and an inescapable momentum” (Live For Live Music), the group’s sound has become an unstoppable force. They have been wowing audiences around the country and the Caribbean since their inception in 2011 with an unparalleled live show and a relentless tour schedule.

Jesse Barry, known for her soulful blues pipes and contagious enthusiasm on stage, began her music career at the tender age of eight years old. Influenced by Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Carole King, Etta James, and Susan Tedeschi, Jesse has created her own, unique blues sound. She is often described as an “old soul” and audiences are stunned by the huge voice that comes out of her small body. Popularly known as “Skinny Legs” from Skinny Legs and All, a band she created as a teenager, Jesse has placed in the Mountain Xpress “Best Of” blues band category three years in a row, and has performed at B.B. King’s Club for the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee, and at the Springing the Blues Festival in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Jesse competed on the popular TV show “American Idol” in season 9 and has made a lasting impact on her hometown, Asheville, North Carolina. She has recorded 3 albums with Skinny Legs and All and is currently working with her blues, funk, and soul group Jesse Barry and The Jam, special events band A Social Function, and her new Steely Dan tribute band Dirty Logic.

—————————————————————-
Southern Pine is the musical project of guitarist and vocalist Zack Kardon. Originally from the Northeast, Southern Pine is now rooted in Asheville, NC. He has played with several nationally touring artists including Midnight Snack, Brie Capone and Carly Taich.
His compositions are subtle yet intricate- often layering many instruments and voices to create an ethereal soundscape that can support raucous guitar solos and delicate string arrangements alike.
Kardon’s songs are deeply personal statements. They don’t seek to describe or explain but simply hover- bottling the essence of a feeling before it evaporates into the ether of memory.
—————————————————————-
Jack Victor is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Asheville, NC. After graduating from Berklee College of Music, Victor fronted Midnight Snack, an art-pop band known for their expressive combination of folk, psych-rock, and indie-dance. In 2017, in an effort to expand his musicality, Victor began experimenting with the guitar for the first time. His most recent solo project was born out of this exploration. The songs are simple and raw, observing the human condition through the lens of a lover, a friend, a son, a stranger.
