Medical Qigong For Back Pain is a 2-day hands-on workshop with David J. Coon, Medical Qigong Master. Learn to cultivate Qi and direct this Qi for alleviating back pain. You will learn three different Medical Qigong Treatment flows to address Low Back Pain, Mid Back Pain and Upper Back & Neck Pain. You will be able to directly incorporate these teachings into your private Acupuncture or Massage Practice. These teachings can bring another dimension to your Treatments that will exponentially increase your patient’s healing results.

David guided me in his explanation to allow the inner transformation of energy to release tensions and allow heightened energy to move through my body from the earth through my brain. I am inspired by his commitment to his practice and I am running with that transmission. I am grateful and will return to study with him again. It was a joy to receive my 15 CEU’s. I learned things that could assist my patients to heal and help me grow into a clearer human being.”

Senior Yoga Teacher Training
Apr 14 @ 9:00 am – 12:30 pm
Asheville Yoga Center

Seniors 65 and older are the fastest growing population right now. These baby boomers are in desperate need of yoga and education to help them adapt to their older bodies, minds and spirits.

Curriculum:
During our time together, we will cover the basics of the aging process, looking at how yoga affects the aging process and also how aging may impact yoga practice. We will also cover special considerations relevant for specific conditions, including spine conditions, joint replacement, heart and breathing conditions, stroke and other neurological conditions, chronic pain, autoimmune disorders, and cancer. Time will also be spent on safe ways to improve balance and decrease fall risk. Sample classes will include floor and chair practices. We will explore modifications for yoga practices appropriate for people with limitations regardless of age. This weekend will be valuable for yoga instructors wanting to share the benefits and inner experience of yoga with a wide range of people while keeping them safe.

Writing in the Age of Loneliness: Eco-Literature & the Writer’s
Apr 14 @ 11:00 am – 12:30 pm
Thomas Wolfe Center for Narrative

We are now in the throes of a sixth mass extinction of plants and animals. Some call it the Anthropocene, but biologist E.O. Wilson said it may be called by scientists and poets alike the Eremozoic, meaning “The Age of Loneliness.” If we take the worries of climate change and habitat destruction seriously—and in this lonely age potentially bereft of our fellow creatures—how can we help but feel an incapacitating sense of hopelessness that threatens to render things like literature and poems utterly useless? In this intensive, we’ll strive together to find ways past this potentially debilitating hurdle. We’ll ask questions that instead of silencing ourselves will urge us on: What is our responsibility as writers to this epoch? Can the average working person with limited access to nature make any difference? How might we depict the suffering of non-human but sentient beings? How can one write about plants and animals without producing work that is sentimental, overly personified, flat-lined with facts, or, worse, rendered incapable of communicating from its own rage? What impact can we make with our words? Depending on the time we have together, we’ll study poems, lyric essays, and stories that have their own solutions to these pitfalls and will try our hands at writing through this darkness with awareness, control, and yes, even hope. Free as needed/By Donation as possible

Packaging Party & Volunteer Orientation!
Apr 14 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Asheville Prison Books Program

The APB monthly packaging party is a chance to help pack up a mess of books headed to facilities across the Carolinas, to learn more about our project, and to spend a lovely afternoon meeting new people, or catching up with old friends! :)

No time to volunteer but want to support our work? We can always use your financial support (https://www.paypal.me/AVLPrisonBooks) and your soft cover book donations!

——–

ABOUT US

APB has been sending books to folks incarcerated in the Southeast since 1999. We currently send books to people in jails and prisons across North and South Carolina.

APB is a prison abolitionist project. We send books to folks who are locked up because it is one of the best ways we have found to show solidarity with them. As a project rooted in anti-authoritarian politics, we view prison as a tool the State uses to uphold an unjust social and economic order based in large part on white supremacy. When dealing with a system that thrives on dehumanization and isolation, finding ways to connect with and meet the every day needs of incarcerated people is a crucial part of challenging the legitimacy of this repressive institution.

============================================

Asheville Drag Brunch is the littlest big show in town! The event is designed to showcase local and guest drag queens, promote local restaurant businesses, and support local organizations.

The show happens at multiple venues, is fast-paced family-friendly fun, and is designed to raise funds for non-profit organizations. These local groups rotate and are advertised with each individual show.

A ticket to brunch ensures a seat at a table or bar, the meal, and a beverage. Remember to bring tips for the queens as this is the main way they raise additional money for the local non-profit.

During the glitter-adorned affairs, patrons howl, clap and cheer as the queens channel celebrities with spot-on lip syncing and sky-high heels. And wherever you look, there is cause for celebration. Lively groups — of different genders, races and ages — whoop it up for all sorts of special occasions, from birthdays to bachelorettes to anniversaries, and even divorces.
