MARCH 29
In the Midst: Environmental Imagery from the Asheville Art Museum
Hilary Schroeder, Curatorial Assistant
Meet at The Collider (1 Haywood Street, Asheville 28801)

In the Midst: Environmental Imagery from the Asheville Art Museum illustrates the inherent grandeur and beauty of nature as well as the human impact on the environment. The primarily black-and-white photographs’ stark contrasts throw subtle details into high relief. Some images capture harsh realities, such as the scars made by roads carved into ancient mountains, overflowing rivers where industrialization has taken hold, or snow blanketing the graveyard of an abandoned manufacturing plant. Others offer a quieter look at coexistence: pecan orchards, a picturesque mill, buildings nestled in their environs, ethereal trees reminding us of nature’s enigmatic spirit. As human-made and natural phenomena become increasingly intertwined, we are reminded of the parallel shifts, interruptions, and journeys that mark the course of the fate of both.

First exhibited as part of Photoplusavl (November 7-11, 2018), this installation of In the Midst is part of Climate City Expo (CCx), hosted by The Collider. CCx offers professional and experiential tracks for individuals to explore innovation at the forefront of climate adaptation and resilience. The CCx: Arts track, which includes this exhibition, allows the community to see how artists are using craft, film, photography, and fine art to bring attention to our changing climate and environment. Offered to licensed massage therapists, discounts given to ASMY graduates.

Want to have fun while getting your CEUs? Spend three days with Pete Whitridge exploring deep tissue structures of the upper body that are at the root of most client pain.

• Deepen your knowledge of anatomy and fascial structures
• Teach your clients to work with you during therapy

• Slow down, focus your attention, be more effective with less effort

This workshop explores the Responsibility Center, focusing on the scapulae, shoulder girdle, brachial plexus, cervical ligaments and mandible. This is a multi-disciplinary approach to chronic pain. We will use orthopedic assessments, passive and active fascial stretching, muscle energy techniques, hydrotherapies, and cross fiber friction to help identify and eliminate pain and dysfunction. You will have the opportunity to dialogue about your own specific client needs and learn self-care strategies to help clients maintain pain free movement. We will review current findings from the Fascia Research Congress while exploring the unique nature of the connective tissues!

This class is designed to help you pinpoint problem areas quickly, devise strategies to eliminate pain, and work collaboratively with your client. You will receive lots of bodywork, learn new ways to handle clients with chronic pain, and reconnect with fellow massage therapists. Special Science Pub: Understanding the Importance of Data
Mar 29 @ 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm
Asheville Museum of Science

Join us at The Collider for a special edition of Science Pub in celebration of Climate City Expo!

About this talk:

“You can have data without information, but you cannot have information without data.”

The Sustained Assessment process has produced a suite of climate change reports: The Third National Climate Assessment (NCA3), The Fourth National Climate Assessment, Volume I, and Volume II (NCA4), Regional Surface Climate Conditions in CMIP3 and CMIP5 for the United States: Differences, Similarities, and Implications for the U.S. National Climate Assessment, Impacts of Climate Change on Human Health in the United States: A Scientific Assessment, and NOAA’s State Climate Summaries. Not only are these groundbreaking reports on climate change science, they are also the first suite of climate science reports to provide detailed documentation on data transparency, accessibility and scientific reproducibility. Most often, these reports are discussed in context of their scientific findings as they relate to policy and decision-making. This presentation will highlight the importance in the underlying data as a partner to the recommendations for policy and decision-makers.

Speaker: Sarah Champion, Data Architect with the North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies (NCICS)/North Carolina State University at NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI)

Science Pub events are free to the public, with free drinks and light snacks, thanks to the generous sponsorship of The Collider, Wicked Weed Brewing, Ingles Markets, and the Buncombe County Government Tourism Development Authority. Registration is not required. Doors open at 5:30 PM, and talks begin at 6 PM.

Breaking Barriers: Transforming Codependency
Mar 29 @ 6:00 pm – Mar 31 @ 12:00 pm
Asheville Yoga Center

Codependency has been called the ‘disease of the lost self’. Thomas Merton wrote ‘To allow oneself to be carried away by a multitude of conflicting concerns, to surrender to too many demands, to commit oneself to too many projects, to want to help everyone in everything, is to succumb to the violence of our time.” This is often how we lose ourselves; we minimize what’s going on inside, while over-reacting to the outside.

This workshop is for anyone choosing to develop a deeper relationship with self. It is ideal for those whose family system is affected by addiction as well as those in the ‘helping professions:’ teachers (especially yoga teachers), medical or social work professionals and healers.

In this weekend workshop, you will explore:

-Asana, pranayama, meditation, and chanting to ground your body -Ways to delve into your personal patterns (samskaras), undo those that are harmful, and reinforce those that are beneficial
–Techniques to connect your true self with a higher power
-Tools for healing through a process of awareness, self-love, and creativity.

Tina & Her Pony

“Tina & Her Pony deliver a gentle folk music that inexorably swells into a powerful wave. The songs themselves carry a gentle wisdom that invigorates the listener. Tina & Her Pony truly commit to a kind of chamber folk that feels as timeless as it does timely.”
– Rachel Cholst, NO DEPRESSION

In a soundscape rich in folk and americana offerings Tina and Her Pony (Tina Collins and Quetzal Jordan) stand out with their clarity and freshness. Their harmonies, arrangements, lyrics and captivating vocals combine to create something greater than the sum of the pieces which, taken individually are deceptively straightforward. Their talents are honed sharper on their latest release, “Champion” (2017), which chronicles complex emotional landscapes with the kind of wisdom and honesty required from roots music in its most distilled and cherished forms.

Tina and Quetzal have been upending expectations and convention from early on. Tina’s distinctive vocals and songwriting are the product of both a conservatory education and her singular taste in female folk artists like Gillian Welch, Joni Mitchell and Kate Wolf. Quetzal, a Canadian-Guatemalan cellist and songwriter, immersed herself deeply in the classical world for a decade, eventually turning her rigorous training on its head by becoming one of the nations most uniquely stylized cellists, coaxing rhythm and other improvised sounds rarely seen on her instrument.

“Even within the world of folk, their music can’t be defined within a single culture or concept. What is undeniable, however, is the soul-stirring power in their union”. – Folk All Y’all

Identifying as queer also plays an important role in how Tina and Quetzal approach their unique blend of old time folk, newgrass, americana, and the essential musical and personal alchemy they only have together. Quetzal describes her cello playing as the oceanic counterpoint to Tina’s earthy, time-honored musical approach. It’s an apt metaphor for the couple, who married in 2016, after playing music together since 2010. Tina counts through-hiking the Appalachian Trail as a formative musical and human experience, deepening her connection to that place and its musical traditions while Quetzal relishes places of fluidity in both art and expression and constantly inverts expectations.

Live performances weave a fascinating web of sound and intention that draws the audience in. Listening to Tina and Her Pony offers a window into an interior landscape that begs to be explored.

Laura Blackley

Laura Blackley is a singer, writer and purveyor of high lonesome Appalachian blues and soul. She plays ‘folk tunes with a rock n roll soundtrack’ with her band the Wildflowers. Their album, titled “Tell It To the Darkness” was released in April 2017.

Laura Blackley & the Wildflowers took first place in the North Carolina Piedmont Blues Preservation Society’s 31st annual Blues Challenge Band Competition back in October 2016. This win put them on the roster of artists invited to compete in the International Blues Challenge, held in Memphis, Tennessee in February 2017.

Blackley also sings classic country duets and dance tunes with The Old Chevrolette Set, a honky tonk band from Asheville, NC.

Blackley was an on-air host and producer for seven years at WNCW 88.7 FM in Spindale, NC, spotlighting contemporary regional music, blues, bluegrass, old-time and women in roots music.

She currently works (in addition to her gig schedule) as a Teaching Artist with elementary age children, and is a recipient of numerous TAPAS (Teaching Artists Presenting in Asheville Schools) grants, working with area students exploring their North Carolina musical heritage.

Blackley was invited in February 2018 by the City of Morganton, NC to teach Burke County 3rd graders about Caldwell County native (and Piedmont Blues musician) Etta Baker, for the school system’s Etta Baker week.

A born storyteller, she has played in many bands, traveled many back roads and interstates and enjoys digging up old tunes and hearing the stories behind them. She believes that music has a healing power and is a communal act, and is very much looking forward to the next gig.
