Appalachian Evenings: The Seen and Unseen Benefits of Bats
Oct 10 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Mars Hill University

The Seen and Unseen Benefits of Bats to Humans with Gary McCracken

Locally and globally bats provide enormous benefits to human welfare. Many of these benefits are provided out of view, high in the night sky, and the values of the services that bats provide to humans are largely unappreciated. At the same time, bats face new threats from humans that are putting bats and the benefits they provide at risk. I will talk about the diversity of bats and benefits they provide, focusing on the “unseen” and recently appreciated value of the services that bats provide to humans. The local and global threats of bats will be discussed in the context of what we can do to benefit bats.

One of the world’s leading experts on bats, Gary McCracken is a professor in the department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His research concerns the distribution of animals in space, their behavior and interactions, and resulting impacts on genetic population structure.

Appalachian Evenings are free of charge and all are welcome. The event will be held in the Ramsey Center, which is located inside Renfro Library on the campus of Mars Hill University.

For events that happen before 6pm on a weekday, please park in the lot on Bailey Street just next to the Greenway – across the street from Chambers Gym. After 6pm, visitors may park in any available green or white parking space, even if it is designated “faculty” or “students.”

Vintage Flight Night
Oct 10 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
Archetype Brewing

Join us for a special night at Archetype Brewing. Ticket-holders will get a commemorative Archetype tasting glass and 5 oz. pours of 4 aged Archetype beers. These beers are our “top shelf” specialty brews, some have aged for over a year, and we’re finally ready to tap them. Along with the beer, we’ll have sliced-on-the-spot meats from Hickory Nut Gap Farm and aged cheeses from Looking Glass Creamery. Brewer Steven Anan will be there hanging out, discussing the beers and methods, and answering any questions drinkers might have. Tickets can be purchased in advance through the link on this page or on our website.

THE BEER:

Belgian Strong – 12 months – Stainless – 11.2% ABV
“BEST IN SHOW” WINNER AT NC BREWERS GUILD 2018 BREWER’S CUP COMPETITION!
This is a beer close to our hearts. First brewed last fall, it’s been aging to perfection for a whole year, and just keeps getting better. Big berry bouquet (cranberry, tart cherry, blueberry) with notes of figs, raisins, caramelized sugars, and Belgian candi syrup. Medium-bodied and dry finish makes this a deceptively drinkable strong ale, you’ll be transported to a tiny, stone-walled bar in rural Belgium as you drink it.

Nameless Light Brett IPA – 10 months – Stainless – 6.7% ABV
Brewed with 100% Brett yeast, this IPA is floral and funky. You’ll pick up notes of lilies, spices, earthy pine and woody evergreen with a tropical bouquet finish of guava, pineapple, grapefruit, and lemon zest. Over time, the hop flavor has mellowed, and the Brett characteristics have continued to develop. The result is a rustic, complex beer that defies style parameters.

Walk the Earth Blend no. 1 – 10 months – French Oak and Stainless – 8.0% ABV
Barrel-Aged Brett Saison dry-hopped with Chinook and Saaz hops. This beautifully complex and funky fare has notes of plum, cranberry, honeysuckle and sourdough with a hint of spice, ending with a lovely vanilla oak finish. The flavors change and develop as the beer warms up to room temperature, so this is a sippin’ beer.

Devil’s Nest Belgian Tripel – 15 months – French Oak and Stainless – 10.2% ABV
Primary fermentation is with our house Belgian yeast strain, and then the batch undergoes secondary Brettanomyces fermentation in oak for 6 months. This beer is a nod to the old days, beautifully complex, a little funky and full of flavor. You’ll pick up on honey, white wine and molasses, as well as fruity notes of tart cherry and blackberries, finishing up with lovely oak vanillins from the barrel.

“The precision and sophistication of the writing and playing blows me away. I am so glad to be involved,” writes guitar legend Michael Chapman in his introduction to Sarah McQuaid’s fifth solo album If We Dig Any Deeper It Could Get Dangerous – which he offered to produce after meeting Sarah at a festival where they were both on the bill.

Recently honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Ards International Guitar Festival in Northern Ireland, Sarah’s also drawn critical praise for her voice (which has been variously likened to malt whiskey and melted chocolate) and her engaging rapport with audiences: “I’ve attended hundreds of concerts of all kinds, and her subtle mastery onstage launches her straight into my fave shows ever,” wrote The Huffington Post.

With the release of her new album, the Madrid-born, Chicago-raised, Cornwall-based singer/songwriter has expanded her battery of instruments to include piano, electric guitar and drum, and it’s drawn critical raves internationally: Dutch music magazine Heaven hailed it as “an early contender for folk album of 2018,” the UK’s fRoots said it was “a collection to savour” and the USA’s PopMatters called it “a gateway into a true innovator’s soul.”

“Seeing a shared world in a new way, from a different angle, is the role of the songwriter. Sarah gets a gold star on that front. This is a fabulous album.” —The Afterword

“A darkly melodic, richly layered folk tapestry … haunting and sparse, yet beautifully rendered … a voice as thick and soft as fur.” —Elmore Magazine

“A work of formidable passion.” —FolkWords

Luke Spiller (vocals) – Adam Slack (guitar) – Jed Elliott (bass) – Gethin Davies (drums) In just a few years, The Struts have found themselves massively embraced by some of the greatest icons in rock-and-roll history. Along with opening for The Rolling Stones, The Who, and Guns N’ Roses, the U.K.-bred four-piece was hand-picked by Mötley Crüe to serve as the supporting act for their last-ever performances, while Dave Grohl praised them as the best band to ever open for Foo Fighters.

After making their full-length debut with 2016’s Everybody Wants, The Struts now return witha new single “Body Talks.” On the song, The Struts let loose with the sing-along-ready and riff-heavy sound they’ve brought to stadiums and arenas all around the world. The blues-spiked track captures what Spiller calls “that moment when you mosey on over to someone on the dancefloor, and the music’s blaring so loud you can’t even talk to each other.”

Formed in Derby, England, in 2012, The Struts almost instantly drew a major following with their outrageous live show, and later made their debut with Have You Heard (a 2015 EP whose lead single “Could Have Been Me” hit #1 on Spotify’s viral chart). Before they’d even put out their first album, the band opened for The Rolling Stones before a crowd of 80,000 in Paris and toured the U.S. on a string of sold-out shows. Known for his lovably swaggering stage presence—the very factor that gave The Struts their name—Spiller soon inspired legendary designers like former Queen costumer Zandra Rhodes to custom-create his lavish and glittering onstage attire. As the frontman points out, that heightened element of spectacle is all a part of the band’s mission of making an unforgettable impact on the crowd. “We believe in giving our absolute all every night, because that’s what our fans deserve,” he says. ͞The goal is always to get everyone dancing and screaming and shouting, and to make sure they leave dripping in sweat with huge smiles on their faces.
