Twelve years after Michael Pollan first opened our eyes to the modern problems of the industrial food complex, organic farmer and successful businessman Robert Turner explores what has changed in our food culture and how the current ‘grow local’ and ‘farm to table’ movement is now determining where and how we live. In Carrots Don’t Grow on Trees an organic farm takes center stage in a new kind of agriculturally-based community where residents gain closer connections healthy food and the farmers who grow it. Turner wasn’t trying to build Utopia; the community he envisions is the next logical step for the ‘eat your view’ movement that has already changed restaurant menus around the world. Turner takes a no-nonsense business approach to saving small farms and protecting our local farming capacity while preserving the important knowledge of growing food for future generations.
Robert Turner is a writer for several columns in regional food and lifestyle magazines, an entrepreneur, and the founder of multiple businesses in such diverse industries as manufacturing, licensing, publishing and real estate development. Now owner of an organic farm and the Executive Director of the Creekside Farm Education Center, Turner is a dedicated advocate for small, local farmers and sustainable food production. Mr. Turner is a graduate from Illinois State University with a bachelor’s degree in English Literature. He currently lives with his wife Kara on a working farm in the mountains of Western North Carolina. They have two sons in college.

I stumbled upon belly dance almost 6 years ago after breaking my wrist and going through a divorce, and it was one of the most healing experiences I’ve ever had. Belly dance improves the flow of our life force energy which is innately healing. I hope belly dance can be as nurturing and healing for you as it has been for me!…
This 7 week series is for the absolute beginner or those wishing to review the basics. Drop-in or come for the whole series. Belly dance is for anyone. Each class will begin with a warm up and stretching. I will review basic moves and build on those moves throughout the series. We will work on some basic choreography with 1 song towards the end of the series. If you’ve never taken a class with me before your first class is $10. Wear similar clothes that you would to a yoga class- there is no need to expose your belly. Hip scarves are optional. If you are under 18 y.o. I ask that you have a parent or legal guardian attend the class as well.
No dance experience is needed. No class on January 24th- if there is enough interest I may stream an online class for Q & A.

Join Sanctuary Brewing Company and Ben Phan, Guitarist and Songwriter on February 7th, 2018 for an evening of incredible music by an even more incredible person!
A year of jazz conservatory at Virginia Commonwealth University left Ben Phan rebellious: uninspired by the environment and fed-up with the structure, he knew he didn’t want to be an academic musician.
So Phan began his professional career as a founding member of the Richmond Afrobeat Movement, a blend of jazz, funk and African dance music which earned significant attention in the South, including a TV appearance and other media features.
A stint as Musical Director for Free Run Wine Merchants gave Phan a chance to develop his professional skills, setting up musical events for the company, which included solo jazz gigs as well as band arrangements.
Phan then joined a bluegrass and folk band, the Rusty Strings, and discovered the joy in sitting on a porch and singing together with others, simply for the love of music.
In 2014, Phan decided to hike the Pacific Crest Trail and his life changed forever. Along with everything else he needed, he carried a mini-guitar on his back and became known by the name “Shredder” because of how he “shredded the guitar” when he played. Five months of travel on foot, 2,668 miles from the Mexican border all the way into Canada, playing for himself and the people he met, transformed his relationship with music. He began writing songs, drawn from his experiences on the trail as well as his past struggles with depression, addiction, loss and love. The music offered hope and solace, to him and to his audiences.
The time on the Pacific Crest Trail renewed Phan’s passion for music. With a prolific body of original work, he returned to Asheville to record his first solo EP, “Hold On, Let Go.” He assembled a band, made up of some of the best musicians in Asheville: besides liking his music, they appreciate the dedication and professionalism Phan brings to his work. The band released it’s debut album, “Dreams in Modern Folk”, to a sold out crowd at the Altamont Theatre, one of Asheville’s finest listening rooms. The band continued to perform successful shows over the following year, refining their high energy sound which combines fiery improvisation with rich composition. This led to a successful kickstarter campaign to fund their next album, “Fear is the Teacher”, which the band is currently recording with Grammy winning producer Matt Williams. Phan continues to perform with the band, as a solo artist, and in collaborations with other musicians; he has also built a successful guitar teaching practice, which he finds a great source of inspiration.
Phan is a prolific poet, songwriter, and guitarist, with the soul of an improviser. He crafts his songs to give room for improvisation, presence, and self-expression in the moment. He believes that the best live music is when everyone playing is co-creating – which means that every one of his concerts offers audiences a different sound and a unique experience.

Billy Gilmore & Friends
www.billygilmoreandfriends.com
Progressive bluegrass multi-instrumentalist Billy Gilmore started playing the five-string banjo when he was seven years old, and quickly added guitar, mandolin, dobro, fiddle, pedal steel, bass and keyboards to his list of instruments, all of which he has mastered, in any style from bluegrass to jazz, swing to funk and soul and rock and roll and all points in between. Gilmore has toured and recorded with an impressive number of groups, including Brittany Reilly & The Almost Acoustic Band, Crazy Fingers, The Bluegrass Travelers, Quartermoon, Aquaphonics, Stonehouse and the Hickory Project, and is the band leader and frontman for the juggernaut The Grass Is Dead, a band whose fresh bluegrass twist on the classic Grateful Dead catalogue has quickly earned them legions of fans from the Rockies to the Atlantic. When The Grass Is Dead is off the road, Billy is exploring his other creative outlets as a hot picker, and tours with a revolving cast of characters from his past, present and future…
