Bryan Robinson launches #Chill in convo with Maryedith Burrell
Jan 11 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe

Stop stressing and learn to chill with this mindfulness and meditation guidebook that can help workaholics and others let go of anxiety and achieve and maintain the healthy work/life balance they need.

We all know good health and happiness depends on having proper balance between our professional and private lives. But in today’s hectic work environment, in which we must do more in less time with fewer resources, that goal can feel impossible to attain. We stay late at the office rather than being home with our families. We work into the night and on weekends to perfect that presentation or just catch up, rather than relaxing with a hobby or spending time with our friends. Under constant pressure to over-perform, work easily becomes the dominant force in our lives.

Licensed psychotherapist and professor Bryan Robinson understands the demands we face. He also knows that it’s difficult to stop the cycle of over-work. But there is a solution. In #Chill, Robinson explains how ending the cycle of work addiction can be achieved by reframing priorities and cultivating mindfulness in our daily lives. He provides a month-by-month guide with meditations that help center and soothe us, allowing us to step back, close our eyes, take a long breath, and focus on the moment.

Bryan Robinson will be joined by writer and actress Maryedith Burrell.

We ask that you purchase the books you want to be signed at our events from Malaprop’s. When you do this you are not only supporting the work it takes to run an events program, you are also telling the publishers that they should keep sending authors here. Can’t make it to the store for the event? Call us or order the book on our website in advance, and we’ll get it signed for you. Make sure you write your preferences in the comments if you purchase online.

HoosierDevil Presents: The Travelin’ McCourys at The Grey Eagle
Jan 11 @ 8:00 pm – 11:59 pm
The Grey Eagle

The Travelin’ McCourys at The Grey Eagle with Danny Burns at The Grey Eagle in Asheville, NC Friday January 11, 2019!

The Travelin’ McCourys do not stand still. They are on the road—and online—entertaining audiences with live shows that include some of the best musicians and singers from all genres. It’s always different, always exciting, and always great music.
No other band today has the same credentials for playing traditional and progressive music. As the sons of bluegrass legend Del McCoury, Ronnie McCoury on mandolin and Rob McCoury on banjo continue their father’s work—a lifelong dedication to the power of bluegrass music to bring joy into people’s lives. And with fiddler Jason Carter and bassist Alan Bartram, the ensemble is loved and respected by the bluegrass faithful. But the band is now combining their sound with others to make something fresh and rejuvenating.

They recently played with the Allman Brothers at Wanee Fest and then brought the house down at Warren Haynes’ Annual Christmas Jam, an invitation only Southern Rock homecoming. Their jam with the Lee Boys was hailed by many as the highlight of the evening, and once word of the live video hit the streets, sent new fans online to watch a supercharged combination of sacred steel, R&B, and bluegrass. They’ve also performed with Warren Haynes, Phish, and have a tour scheduled with the aforementioned Lee Boys. Ronnie McCoury described it as “peanut butter and jelly.” It was just right.
They can push forward so far because their roots are so deep. The band has a confidence that only comes with having paid their dues with twenty years on the bluegrass road. Other groups and new fans hear this immediately—the tight rhythm, the soulful material, and the confidence in taking bluegrass from the safety of the shore into uncharted waters.

Ronnie says, “We like to go in and play traditional bluegrass music the way we do it with Dad, but we also like to be able to step into situations where we can really stretch out. If we need to plug in, we’ll plug in. We’re open to anything.”

It’s that attitude, backed up by talent, that marks great musicians, traditional or progressive. The Travelin’ McCourys are twenty-first century musical pilgrims and adventurers. They’re onto something new, just like Bill Monroe was in the 1940s, but now we can see and hear that adventure live or online. Go see them, or—if you hold still long enough—they’ll come to you.

“Don’t call Danny Burns a newcomer.

Two decades before releasing his 2018 debut, North Country — a collaborative album filled with appearances by icons like Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, and Tift Merritt— he kicked off his career as a traveling folksinger, logging shows on both sides of the Atlantic. He’s been on the road ever since, sharpening a sound that mixes the folk traditions of his native Ireland with diverse American influences.

Raised in a family of working musicians, Burns spent his childhood in the Irish county of Donegal. He grew up surrounded by singers and instrumentalists, receiving a first-class education in Irish folk music along the way. It was a communal experience, filled with folksongs that had been passed down from one generation to the next. “It was never about one specific musician,” he remembers. “It was about listening and learning. It was about playing a song, then passing the guitar to the person beside you, and hearing them play a song, too. There was no ego involved.”

North Country doubles down on that communal spirit. After living in America for 19 years — first in New York City, where he cut his teeth with a string of bar gigs, followed by stints in New Orleans, Chicago, and the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC — Burns has shared shows with a number of acclaimed musicians who, like him, breathe new life into older sounds. North Country nods to that diverse group of friends, shining a light not only Burns himself, but also on the community he inhabits. Holly Williams, Mindy Smith, Dan Tyminski, Cara Dillon, Tim O’Brien, ChessBoxer, and Old Crow Medicine Show’s Critter Fuqua all make appearances. The result is a transatlantic folk album that’s both diverse and driving, filled with swooning melodies, evocative storytelling, and an elevated level of musicianship.

Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas both perform on North Country’s kickoff track, “Let It Go,” whose lyrics tell the story of two lovers drinking up the nightlife of New Orleans. Holly Williams joins the group on “Look Into Her Eyes,” a harmony-driven tune punctuated by fiddle and dobro, while Tim O’Brien appears during the elegiac Celtic ballad “Darling Róisín.” Elsewhere, Burns teams up with Cara Dillon to pay tribute to Amy Winehouse on the moving “Amy,” waxes nostalgic about his homeland on “Great Big Sea,” and swaps harmonies with Tift Merritt on “Human Heart.”

Clocking in at 10 tracks, North Country feels like the soundtrack to a dinner party whose members have all left the kitchen table and headed to the music room, eager to share songs with one another. There’s plenty of acoustic guitar, pedal steel, upright bass, mandolin, banjo, and other rustic instruments, as well as multiple voices. There are also snatches of American roots music, 1970s Irish folk, Bible Belt country, and bluegrass, with influences like Richard Thompson and Steve Earle looming large. At the center of the mix is Danny Burns: a red-headed, storytelling, hard-touring Irishman whose own voice is just as evocative as his songwriting.

Self-produced by the frontman himself, North Country was largely recorded at Gary Paczosa’s home studio in Nashville, as well as the city’s Butcher Shoppe studio (owned by John Prine and David “Fergie” Ferguson).

Robin and Linda Williams:

For more than four decades now, Robin & Linda Williams have made it their mission to perform the music that they love, “a robust blend of bluegrass, folk, old-time and acoustic country that combines wryly observant lyrics with a wide-ranging melodicism.” Today some might call it “Americana,” but these two revered music masters were living and breathing this elixir 20 years before that label was turned into a radio format.

As live performers they are second to none. Their stirring concerts have earned them a huge body of fans over the years. But as gifted songwriters Robin and Linda have earned an even rarer honor, the devotion and deep respect of their musical peers. As The Washington Post put it, “The Williamses are able to sum up a life in a few details with moving completeness.” The list of artists who have covered their original songs include some of the greats of country music, names like Emmylou Harris, Tom T. Hall, George Hamilton IV, Tim & Mollie O’Brien, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Kathy Mattea and The Seldom Scene.

“Among contemporary country performers,, Robin and Linda Williams shine like a diamond amid rhinestones …”
— David W. Johnson, The Boston Globe

Linda is a native of Anniston, Alabama and Robin (the son of a Presbyterian minister) was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. They met and fell for each other in 1971 on a visit to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina while Linda was teaching school and Robin was a full-time musician on a national coffeehouse circuit. It wasn’t long before they discovered additional magic when they combined their voices in harmony.

Despite being true children of the South, their career got its initial momentum up north in the Minneapolis folk scene. Robin had made many friends and connections there as a solo artist and in 1975 they recorded their first album in Minneapolis for a local record company. The same year they made their first appearance on a little radio show just getting off the ground called “A Prairie Home Companion” and their rich relationship with that icon of American broadcasting has continued for four decades.

Over the years they recorded several fine albums and continued to crisscross the country, past miles and miles of highway signs, thrilling audiences with their songs and harmonies. Folk and country fans alike loved their honest heartfelt music. In 1989 a major breakthrough came with their signing to Sugar Hill Records, with whom they would go on to record nine albums. It would be a fruitful relationship and, amazingly, each succeeding recording (beginning with 1989’s “All Broken Hearts Are the Same”) would top the previous one in artistry and quality.

Around the same time, they began to tour with a band, Their Fine Group, and their already big sound grew all the more. 1993 saw increased exposure through a major tour with Mary Chapin Carpenter and the now large national audience of “A Prairie Home Companion.” With their career now at its 20 year mark Robin and Linda entered into a prolific period of artistic productivity. Within six years they released their all gospel CD , “Good News”, (which garnered two nominations for Gospel Album of the Year). After that, the Williamses released three CD’s of predominately original material, beginning with 1996’s “Sugar For Sugar” (which spent 13 weeks on the Americana chart). This period of productivity, culminating with 2000’s “Company of Strangers,” served notice to an ever-increasing audience of Robin and Linda’s dedication to their artistry.

Having always sung gospel music, in the late 1980s they teamed up with their old friend and “A Prairie Home Companion” host Garrison Keillor and bluegrass songstress Kate MacKenzie to form The Hopeful Gospel Quartet. This wonderful sideline ensemble has gone on to release two albums and tour the USA, British Isles and Europe.

Robin & Linda have made appearances on such major programs as “The Grand Old Opry,” “Austin City Limits,” “Music City Tonight,” “Mountain Stage” and they continue to make frequent appearances on “A Prairie Home Companion.” ” … vocally and instrumentally, the Williamses combine impeccable musical discipline with a bare simplicity and an utter lack of pretension.”
__ Stephen Holden, The New York Times

For 25 years they toured constantly with Their Fine Group. Band members have included Jim Watson on bass, vocals and mandolin, who has been with them since the group’s beginning. Jim was a founding member of The Red Clay Ramblers and played with them for 14 years. The fourth chair of the Fine Group has been filled with several excellent performers: Kevin Maul on dobro and slide, steel guitar; Jimmy Gaudreau on mandolin and mandola, and the wonderful fiddle/mandolin player, Chris Brashear. Most often these days Robin and Linda can be heard in concert as a duo, going back to the roots that brought them together 40 years ago.

The Williams’ period of productivity has no end. Their 2002 recording, “Visions of Love, ” was produced by Garrison Keillor. It garnered a three-star review in USA Today upon its release and received rave notices nationwide. The CD spent several months on the Americana charts and topped the list on several others.

“if we have any two voices better at rendering american music i haven’t heard them.” victory review.com, February 2002
2003 launched the Fortune – Williams Music Festival. Each Fall, Robin and Linda teamed up with Jimmy Fortune and a few of their friends for a line-up of music fit for a setting like the Frontier Cultural Museum in Staunton, VA. With this single event, they managed to host some of the nation’s top musicians for three days of non-stop entertainment until its closing in 2011.

The big item in 2004 was their new move to the prominent independent label, Red House Records. Red House is the Grammy-winning home of several major American roots-based singers and songwriters including Greg Brown, John Gorka, Lucy Kaplansky, Spider John Koerner and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott. Robin and Linda’s 2004 recording, “Deeper Waters,” has been reviewed as to “what amounts to nothing short of a masterpiece” by the All Music Guide.

2005 – Finally, a Christmas recording from Robin and Linda! “The First Christmas Gift” has great new Christmas songs of their own composition, as well as songs by John Prine, Roger Miller and Steve Earle. “‘The First Christmas Gift’ is a breath of fresh air in an overcrowded, cliche-ridden field …” ‘Shotgun Shells On A Christmas Tree’ will probably become a bluegrass standard. __ The Washington Post

2005 opened new opportunites for Robin and Linda to be included in Robert Altman’s final film, “A Prairie Home Companion.” The movie is a fictional representation of behind-the-scenes activities at the long-running public radio show of the same name. Here, they appeared as themselves and performed “Old Plank Road.” Filmed at the Fitzgerald Theater and released in 2006, the movie pooled the talents of four Oscar winners. Critics’ general reaction to the film was favorable: Roger Ebert awarded the film four out of four stars, saying, “What a lovely film this is, so gentle and whimsical, so simple and profound” and later added the film to his “Great Movies” list.

In 2007 Robin & Linda Williams put together a collection of their best live performances from the hit radio show “A Prairie Home Companion” on a recording appropriately titled “Radio Songs.” “Radio Songs is a unique retrospective of one of the most enduring and energetic musical acts of the last few decades.” __ Bluegrass Music News Network. “This CD is like going back in time to a day when radio was prominent in every home. MUSIC ROW MAGAZINE writes, “It doesn’t get any better than these two entwining their pure voices on a glowing, burnished Carter Family jewel.”

Home for Robin and Linda has always been an old frame house built around a log cabin right in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, so in 2008 they released their 20th recording, “Buena Vista,”tunes that take us down south to country’s bumpy back roads and mountain views. With this recording the Williamses penned a finely detailed drawing of American characters. “Music and meaning are seamless, genuine, and first-rate, as we have come to expect from this gifted team.” __ Dirty Linen

With the revival of Lime Kiln Theater’s “Stonewall Country” Robin and Linda put their original tunes on a 2011 recording. Telling the story of the life of Stonewall Jackson, each song represents a different character or mood, and the music shifts accordingly. So there is a bluegrass number, a blues, and any number of songs that resist genre labeling beyond folk. “Robin and Linda Williams handle all of the lead vocals, and portray all of the different characters and moods, proving themselves to be wonderfully flexible singers.” Stonewall Country __ Oliver di Place

Keeping with the theme of “home and heartfelt love”, the release of 2012’s “These Old Dark Hills” shows Robin and Linda’s songs focusing on “the places” as much as “the people” in their lives. Their harmony-centric and acoustic approaches to music making ensures that the voices and the lyrics- the stories, characters, and settings- always remain at the fore.” _ Fervor Coulee- roots music.

The Williams celebrated their musical legacy in 2013 with the release of their studio album “Back 40” that features fresh treatments of their early classics, many from albums long out of print, and favorites by other writers. Much has changed in the 40 years Robin and Linda Williams have been making music together. “There are constants, too. Especially notable is the couple’s unblemished integrity as performers, songwriters and recording artists.” __ Correspondent Jack Bernhardt, News Observer

No Depression magazine praises Robin and Linda Williams for creating “music that is both comfortable and thoughtful – a rare combination that explains why and how the Williamses are able to keep on an even keel while musical trends come and go. They don’t play at being country – they are country.”

The Developing Spirituality Workshop
Jan 12 @ 8:30 am – Jan 13 @ 4:00 pm
Wellspring Wellness Center

At birth, it is commonly understood that you have come into the world as a spiritual being, but a being who has not yet become spiritual.

If you expect to find an intelligible and sustainable meaning to your suffering and the chaos in which you live, much less an answer for transforming the world, you ultimately will be led to a spiritual path and to accepting the fact that you don’t know anything! And that is good news! For your mind is not the creator of Truth but is meant to be the organizer of Truth which exists outside your mind.

You will eventually come to see that consciousness is the next frontier of your development which goes beyond religion, self-awareness and therapy. Lost in the material world, you lose your connection to your true and essential Self and over time, you become layered in dysfunctional and illusory mental, physical and emotional patterns. But don’t despair! That is part of the process.

We call the understanding of the conscious self-finding the “yoga” of your life. In essence, you must become a student of your life and work. And that is what this program is all about: revealing to you a spiritual path to the discovery of a different reality that will set you free, answer all of your questions you have about who you are and what you are doing here on Earth, and the peace and joy that will provide for you a new dimension of living.
